Maui gt fishing
« on: December 29, 2017, 02:42:53 PM »
Was.wondering if anyone on the site has done this before. I'm headin over in a couple weeks and got all the tackle. Was wondering if anyone had an idea on where most these fish are congregated on the island. Always been a dream to catch one.   Any advice will help. Thanks.

Not sure what GT Fishing is.

I have fly fished from the shore and caught some pretty nice Trevelle (Blue Jacks).
most have been about 6-8 Lbs I think the locals call them Aluas or something like that.
All my fishing has been on the southwest side of the island.
Throw Clousers and strip as fist as you can, also large poppers.
My go to rod is a 10 wt with a neutral buoyancy line, wt forward.
Lots of work for very few fish.
Be out at daylight and watch the waves, this is dangerous fishing.
Good Luck!
Rob.

I have watched GT chase food on Molokai, at least 30 maybe 60#, very active.  Ulua, big Papio, are not easy or abundant.  I am sure I would have tried the fish with my 8 weight if I was close enough but probably best to save my gear for the bonefish (oio).  Watching my expensive fly line disappear over the edge of the reef with no replacements available is not a good idea.  On Maui, respectfully go talk to the locals fishing long rods off of the lava edges, you will get the idea.  Check out Clay Ching's recent catches on his web site, decent GT (Ulua) last week.
