Westport-Ocean Shores Ferry
« on: February 15, 2018, 02:55:00 PM »
Hey Everyone! There used to be a ferry service that connected the north and south cities of Grays Harbor: Westport and Ocean Shores. Unfortunately it had to shut down due to a need of survey and dredging in one of the marinas.

I wanted to reach out to the tight knit community of Hunt-WA for this one.  It would be great to get a poll from all of you on this subject, if you don't mind replying back with the answer, it would help me out a lot!

1.) Would you want a ferry back in service between Westport-Ocean Shores?   Yes/No
2.) How often would you use the service in a year?  1x  ;   2x  ;   3x or more
3.)How much would you be willing to pay for a round trip ticket? Adult:  $15; $25; $35; $45
   (Children 5/under: $8; $12; $15; $18;$20)
4.) How many people in your family would use the ferry?    1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or more

Thanks everyone!  I appreciate your time and consideration!

Have you talked to whom used tonrun the ferry service? Who was thier regular rider? Locals? Tourists? Was It mostly seasonal?

If it was seasonal have you talked to the local shop owners on either side of the run within walking distance?

Do you know what the approx cost times savings is?

IMO if you are trying to restart this run you NEED to find out who is the target market so that you can quiz them directly. 2c

3 times a year I am in Westport with family and I would say we would not have a need to go from Westport to Ocean Shores via ferry.

Google maps says it is 46 miles from Westport to Ocean Shores. At $3/gal of gas it would cost at...
15mpg average $18.40 round trip
18mpg $15.33
25mpg $11.04
32mpg $8.63

Would need to make it worth the money to them in either scenery, the experience, time savings, or ________. What would the service offer that would have them take the ferry instead of simply driving?

Only 46 miles but takes an hour and a half, especially in the summer.

We used to go to Westport often and might have done a walk-on to visit Ocean Shores but would probably not have driven  on.   :twocents:  Of course, we were usually fishing not touristing....

Many years ago we used the ferry. Loved to go from OS to Westport. I would never go the other way since the OS marina is a ways from the city and beach. I would use it again and pay up to $20 a piece for the 2 of us.

I thought the Ocean Shores marina was now privately owned?
In the 70 and 80s there were a few good fishing guide boats out of Ocean Shores. They all left when the marina had issues. That and the road from the hotels to the marina can not last a winter without buckling so bad it needs to be replaced by very spring.
I sold my Ocean Shores condo in mid 90, when they say opted out investing in the community Westport does a much better job of mowing where there money comes from.

Thanks everyone for your input so far. The idea is a private passenger taxi. To answer a few questions. Yes, I know about the previous service, operator, and working on learning more about the business. The main use would be tourism. Ideally around 7 months out of the year running. As Loki said, it's an hour and 15 minute drive each way. So when a person or family chooses to go down to the coast, more than likely they are going to pick a specific place and stick to that general area. Not saying others won't wander and drive. But saving the hassle 3 hour round trip drive either way, and turning it into a 12 minute each way ride. And having a shuttle taking people from the distant OS marina to downtown would help. The marina is owned and operated  by the quinalt nation. The city runs everything outside. I believe having a quick escape system from each town to check out a new area for the day without driving seems like it might be enticing.

I did enjoy when staying in OS taking the ferry to WP for the day to walk the shops, even seen whales on one of our trip over.

I only see it as a benefit to the Ocean Shores owners/visitors as an easy way to get to Westport.  I have spent plentyy of time in both places, I can't imagine why anybody who is parked in Westport would want to go to Ocean Shores.   :dunno:

Market it to the Ocean Shores HOA as a way to improve their seasonal rents and property values, giving the vacation rental clients and owners easy access to a charter trip out of Westport.

Anything that can be done to improve Ocean Shores' marina would be good, that  place is pretty far gone.

The previous operator was required to maintain a rigid schedule so it could meet up with the scheduled bus route on both sides. The entrance to the OS marina in now knee deep on a low tide, even the smallest boats can’t go comfortably. An on demand water taxi would probably work if you make a flyer containing the sections of days with no-go tides. Ferry used to be very busy. Former boat is waiting to see if it gets dredged, might kill a smaller operation if it did.
