wa or out of state this year
« on: February 27, 2018, 10:48:27 AM »
We all know Wa is making it harder and harder to successfully hunt elk. I have only hunted Wa for the last almost 10 years. This will most likely be the first year I will head out of state to chase elk. From the number of  topics being posted on out of state hunting I thought it would be interesting to see where everyone is going and if it's new or something you have been doing for a while.

I have always argued that fishing more than paid for my hunting, but it’s no longer worth it to me in WA. First year I won’t be elk hunting in WA. You left off several other state options to choose from.

Stopped throwing $$$ at WA program several years ago. Way more fulfilling to hunt out of state.  I hunt CO and ID.  At some point I am going to need to spend my 14 elk points though.  This will be the 1st year I don't buy a fishing license as well. Just to easy to make the run to Canadian waters and retain some fish.  Good luck with you decision.

I'm still going to buy WA licenses this year, but nothing crazy. No special permit apps either. Archery Deer so I can take a freezer filler, bear, small game(turkey) and thats it. The rest of my money is going to Idaho and Montana as far as fishing and hunting goes.

I’ll hunt elk in wa for a weekend unless I draw a tag then I’ll take time. Other states I won’t be hunting elk otc but will be applying for elk in a handful of states.
It’s too cheap an application to not apply in wa.

General season harvest rates haven't changed significantly in the last 12 years.

That is where they have you by the nuts. Get hooked on the "prize" and feel like you can't leave until you cash out. I am in a similar boat with 13 quality deer but luckily I burned my quality elk last year and won't be applying again.  :IBCOOL:
