Bear with me Iíve had about four hours sleep last night driving home from Wyoming right now, high on caffeine chocolate beef jerky and life.  Iím talking to my phone because Iím driving so any miss spelled words I can blame it on my phone like when I say bowl and it spells it beOWL instead of BULL. I canít begin to explain the adventure that I had, but Iíll try. It started out with a 12 mile-ish horseback ride into the backcountry  of North West Wyoming. Iíve never rode horses like this or hunted off horses let me tell you it is not easy! The guide works his ass off getting those horses ready fed watered packed unpacked brushed, it was truly amazing to see what this guy was doing for me for no payment simply because the owner of the best of the west  kept his word from many years ago that he would take me elk hunting if I drew this tag. Chris my guide and handler was simply superman to put it in simple terms, his partner Shane showed us everywhere we needed to go to find elk. The first day I passed  up two or three rag Horns,  we saw a wolf and a bear track, grizzly bear track 1 foot away from our tent when we arrived in camp. The hunters before us who camped with us for two days saw five grizzly bears in one day. I personally saw one female with three cubs feeding on a gut pile across the canyon, far across the canyon which I preferred it be.  I shot my bull on the second day it was the biggest bull that I could find in a herd of about 125 elk, simply amazing to see that many elk in one spot. Unfortunately I shot this bull in a canyon where horses could not go, so debone and on our backs was how we got this elk out of this very steep canyon. The first shot was a 600 yard shot, I pulled it a little bit and hit him in the leg, Iím just being honest here, second shot He gave me a perfect broadside shot and I hit him in the chest with a 210 grain VLD bullet from thier 300 WinMag set up with the huskemaw scope.

Unfortunately my last shot made two of our horses run off they were lost for two days with one of the guides rifle and pistol, he  searched on foot for 18 miles looking for his horses, the next day after I got my bull out he found them in a faraway place but thankfully they were all good and his guns were fine. One saddle was upside down and his spotting scope was broke in half, thankfully it was a vortex which Iím sure theyíll replace or fix.  They shot at a wolf and missed there was one Wolf tag left for the area so we were hoping to fill the quota.  we had to leave my elk meat that night in a tree without having the horses that were lost. Packing out the meat and head the next day at 11,000 feet elevation my chest was killing me I thought I was having a heart attack. I understand now Why outfitters with horses charge so much, itís like bearbaiting or chasing  cats and bears with dogs, it looks easy until you do it! Those guys spend incredible amount of time taking care of their hunters, cooking cleaning, making coffee, building a fire, taking care of horses, everything !  And let me tell you riding in the back country on cliffs with 1 foot wide trails on a horse not a relaxing ride you really got to trust your horse and he gave me one of the best, Rusty was a great horse and Iím thankful for him. My bull wasnít the biggest on the mountain but I really felt these guys were working too hard the past his bull up considering I wasn't paying them.

Iím not sure yet what his score is but Iím guessing maybe 300 inches but itís the most memorable bull Iíve ever killed and Iím very happy with it. We didnít get the snows like this hunt usually entails in fact it was beautiful there in the day and cold as heck at night, very cold. I passed up a bull that would score easily 360 to 370 walked right by our camp but he had a life saving broken off fourthpoint  on one side and a third broke off on the other side, truly a massive very thick *censored* bull. It was an honor to see a bull of that caliber walk right by us Iíll never forget it. After I shot my elk we did not see very many animals at all on the mountain, the two hunters in our camp took two bulls both good bulls probably around 310 320 and the hunter below us also took a bull that I never saw.  This is truly an adventure Iíll never forget and Iíll probably never get the opportunity to do again I canít express how thankful I am for the guys at the best of the west for Jack Peterson for setting this up for me, this ainít a sales pitch but we got to stay at their factory see their operation and it is for real. They have a gunsmith working in there that is a genius, their guns are expensive but they are very accurate.  If we had gotten the snow that they usually get the last part of the season Iím sure I wouldíve got a bigger bull and if I couldíve hunted the first week of the season Iím sure I couldíve got a better bull, But such is life and it is hunting and again Iím very happy with the results. Thanks for tagging along Iíll try to post as many picks as I can without crashing here on the road if I come up with something else Iíll post more.

And to make this perfectly clear I did not pay anybody anything for this hunt, I say this because the forest service thinks that these guys take people in for money and they donít! They take friends in in past customers who draw so they can take video for their TV show no way was this a guided paid for hunt for the record.
