Calling over bait
« on: March 24, 2018, 08:22:11 PM »
Any input on this from the more experienced? Mother in law is having a tough time with some dogs on her property, as well as her neighbors (3 goats and 2 sheep so far). Have a foxpro and a few pounds of freezer burnt meat. Have had success with each method separately, but never tried it combined. Does it work or does it make them suspicious?

Coyote vocals over a carcass is probably the best combo on the planet.  However, that is a hunk of meat they have been feeding on for a couple of days and can't be carried off.  For your situation to kill the offending coyote(s) I would be tring to set up where the kills took place.  I would try to locate by siren or yips at night and find the closest coyotes to the kill sites and get in on them.

A few pounds of meat might work for trappers, but I wouldn't spend my time sitting over it.

Went out there this morning with the bit of meat I had, put it out at about 730. Sat over it for 45 minutes and had one come in but spotted us and trotted around toward the neighbors. Took a running shot at him and clean miss. He headed toward the gate with the afterburners kicked in, misjudged it and bounced off the fence like a kid on a trampoline. Never got a second shot at him, but I’m sure he’s hurting a bit. Going to go back next weekend and sit over some bait for the night and see what comes in

They are pretty nocturnal. Most of the coyotes I have shot have been at night. You have a good chance of getting one. If you use meat for bait I recommend that you either stake it down or cut it into small pieces so the coyote can’t just grab it and run off but has to stay at the bait.
I use a green Bowlite clamped on my rifle. There are some other lights that are good. Some of the night vision optics are getting more affordable too.

Ive got a pretty good light for night hunting. Killed quite a few out there over the years at night. I usually prefer hunting them at night, but I guess I'm getting a little soft as I don't like sitting up all night looking for eyes anymore   :chuckle:
