Heading to Chelan
« on: April 13, 2018, 11:29:12 AM »
Going to see if it lives up to all this hype I have been hearing about for Kokanee fishing. Anyone here fish it much? Then on to getting Stevens dialed a little more for the year, have Dan-o and Goldeneye's trip to do, have to be in the prime for that one....  :chuckle:

Are you fishing the derby?
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Fished it a few times with a buddy. It is fun and pretty scenery this time of year. Trees are just starting to bloom down here as well so drive will be nice

The Chelan derby? No plans to. This is just a trip to try to figure it out for a buddy who has a house over there. They are over there a couple times per month so he wants to learn how to kokanee fish so he has something else to do while there.
The Stevens derby I am undecided on at this point, depends on if I can find someone to fill a 2nd seat or not, as well as if the wife plans anything else for that weekend that I can't get out of.

Do you have downriggers? Don't know about this year specifically but usually this time of year we run somewhere around 60 feet, small dodgers and hootchies or brads mini cut plugs trolled SLOW. Pinks in the morning to purples as the sun comes up is how we've done well in the past. The size seems to be cyclical in Chelan, a few years ago they were hawgs but the average seems to have gone down some in the last couple years. You can also go towards town and smack the heck out of rainbows trolling spinners closer to shore or fish up lake and maybe hit some lake trout or even a king. Love that lake

We survived! Managed 23 killed saturday, released a few smaller ones and had a few pop off. Ran riggers at 100-120 with a rod stacked 20 feet above the bottom rod. Sunday ran all the same stuff and managed to kill 6..... Tried changing everything up and still struggled. Sounds like lots of guy struggled both days, we definitely did on sunday. Not too shabby for 3 guys who have never stepped foot on the lake we thought.
Also ran into a herd of Mulies on the way to the ramp Sunday morning, no growth started, or all does, pretty neat.

Nice haul!!  where did you guys launch??  Was thinking of heading over myself.  Lots of reports of bigger fish this year.  I've only fished it a few times but mostly the same thing on several of the forums.  fish are scattered.  Fish them the same as anywhere else, just need to find them.  Stay on them when you do..  Was that was you guys did??

Launched at the State Park. We pretty much got to the starting point, dropped gear and trolled, and kept trolling until we left. We did make a couple loops in a couple of spots, just mainly made one long troll up lake. Sunday we fished a different spot for the first little while, then ran to where we were Saturday and did the same thing, but turned around and made a long troll back toward the park.
