Gutpile succeeds!! LOL
« on: April 15, 2018, 01:06:38 PM »
Not much of a story really. A group of about 16 birds comes to my property in the morning and hangs around for a while and then they move on. There are 5 jakes, this guy and a bunch of hens. They gobble a lot in the trees but are pretty quiet when tbey hit the ground. Also not a lot of strutting yet, I guess the weather is slowing things down. Anyhow these birds managed to come right to my decoys and I sealed the deal. I hope more long beards show up. I want to chase a little more when they are really fired up. I hope the jakes dont get shot off from neighboring props. It'll be fun next year. If they carry over. I weighed him at exactly 23 pounds before dressing and butchering. 9 1/2 inch beard, 1" spur on the right and broken on the left leaving a polished nub. He was covered with scars from fighting i guess. He had one on the breast and a couple on the legs. I've never seen tbat before.

Well done and a nice bird. We saw two birds that looked like they were beelining it to our set up. Enter to hunters and they're gone! Maybe next weekend.

Maybe that's why he was so hard to pluck. I tore him a few times. Never had that problem before, they usually pluck real easy.
