turkey kinda-report
« on: April 17, 2018, 08:38:20 AM »
If we were hunting anywhere else this would be a dead bird report.  The place we were hunting was "jakes only" for us and that was ok as we wanted young turkeys.  Only one batch of jakes came within range and it wasn't until later that I found out it was just 30 yards.  The reason they wouldn't come closer was the two mature toms that were beating the heck out of the jake decoy we had and one was considering mating with our laydown hen.  All this was at the range of 8 yards.    After this Sunday morning viewing no jakes came by our spot, hens only.    Monday morning the owner of the location we were hunting got to shoot one of the toms as he wanted one for mounting.

How’s the weather looking?   We skipped the opener for the first time in 20 years. Had a big party in Vegas for partners 50th. It’s 4-15 so it has always caused a hangover on the second day.  Well worth it. Coming over first week in may.  Not worried about killing birds, never been a problem, just thinking maybe we will have a good time and stay dry. Not a lot of posting by others. Maybe some can chime in about what they are doing.

Birds are acting like it's mid March in my area. Not a lot of talking, toms still in bachelor groups and not reacting to hen talk much. I did manage to tag out on 2 young birds. First was an ambush, 2nd one I setup every tom and jake decoy I had and just did a bunch of hen and tom ke-ke's then went silent. Few min later I noticed an extra bird in the set.  If we get some decent weather I'm sure it will be good the following weeks.

Birds gobbling in the early mornings for about 15 minutes. Silence and spot and stalk hunting until about 2pm. After 2pm they will come in,  but silently. More young jakes than old toms. I saw 3 times as many Jake's as hens. Still in bachelor groups. They should get fired up here this next weekend and early through the middle of next week. The cold, wet,  and windy weather has them being quiet. As soon as we get a few days of sunshine it should be prime time.
