NE WA Turkey Hunt Guidance
« on: April 18, 2018, 02:35:44 PM »
Hello everyone.  My name is Jason and I'm brand new to the site.  This will be my second time turkey hunting, first time was in Klickitat with no sightings/success.  I'm heading to the NE this time and I'm thinking about trying my luck in the Sherman Creek Wildlife area.  Anyone have any luck here?  It's a long drive for me and I'm just trying to maximize my chances of bringing home dinner.   :)  I'm open to exploring other areas in the NE also, preferably with a campsite nearby.   Thanks for your help and good luck out there!

That was the first place I hunted 20 years ago.  I didn’t like it as much. I prefer pockets of state land that are a little more dense with trees. If I remember, it was fairly open.  OnX maps would be very helpful in finding land.  Don’t be shy, move until you find more birds and less hunters.  Have fun.

Thanks for the reply.  I have OnX maps on my phone but need to study it some more.  Also looking at mapmet.com game tracts map.  Good luck out there.

Pretty much anywhere in Colville NF is usually good. I’m there now but they are being really quiet and still in bachelor flocks. It’s going to be a week before the action starts, I think.

Birds should be hot to trot with the warm weather for the next 8 or 9 days coming up.
My dads in Chewelah area now and have taken 4 Toms, 3 youth hunters have tagged birds then he dropped one last night.
Find yourself some state land that’s gated and head in there are birds all over the NE corner.

I was fortunate to get one opening morning in the Sherman Unit but the weather went south and it was hard to find another bird Mon. and Tues. Not much pressure there that is why I hunted that area. Good luck!

Thanks for all of the responses.  I'm heading up that way May 8th-10th.  Hopefully you guys haven't wiped them all out by then.  haha

Seem to be a lot birds around.  I’m an old dude and still managed to hammer two nice toms. (Can’t seem to post pics off my I phone). Some seem to be pretty hot but still seeing bachelor groups of toms and several large flocks of hens. Fantastic weather today and birds were really on the move.  Took a short drive tonight and saw 3 nice toms that would have been quite easy to get. Noisey in the morning and responding later but not really coming in hot yet.  Good luck on your hunt.

Well I saw a Jake on private land on the way in, multiple hens and a strutting Tom on the way out, but nothing in the Sherman Creek area.  Weather wasn't the greatest but I don't think there were any turkeys in the area anyway.  I ran into another hunter and we both struck out.  No time to really change locations since the family was with me and breaking down camp would have sucked in the rain.  Oh well.  Maybe the fall will me kinder.  Congrats all those that have been successful this spring.  :)

Last weekend lots of birds. Vocal on the roost but quiet after fly down. Have patience. I sat calling for 15 min and then decided to stand up only to see a big red head looking at me before flying off.  :chuckle:

Totally agree.  Last weekend same thing vocal on the roost flew down zippo we just sat in the blind bs'ing.  Letting out a couple purrs and clucks with a yelp or 2.  Had a strutting tom with a alert hen.  In front of its red a little bench below what we were on and then a big draw.  A little after 6 a.m. a tom ripped off about 50 yards in front of us.   Look to my left I shot a jake and hen on that bench going right to left.  The tom was just behind some trees and I bbn didn't see him but my hunting partner did.  He was giving me this one since he got one last evening. Speed him finally 40 yards out. The enviro Heavy Shot blended did its job.  Patience for sure and head on a swivel because you never know where they might be.

Well unfortunately I will not be able to go back to the NE before the end of the season.  May try to sneak away and find something closer to home but I've heard that isn't too promising.
