How the crap did that happen? Check the regs and make sure your go to hunts didn't disappear.

Heavy harvest year after year on declining herds. Cutback may have been needed on some cows. Although a unit I hunt during that season I have no problem with the cutback to help herds regrow for a bit. As far as my typical hunts and special permits go we are getting a big hit this season. But I understand and will adjust accordingly to make the season work.

Looks like last year 506, 520, and 530 were antlerless only for late archery, and this year 506 and 530 were changed to 3 pt. minimum bulls and antlerless, while 520 was eliminated from late archery entirely.

I like hunting winston but the herds are down. I agree with taking it out for the late hunt.

With 520 gone it’s probably going to get kind of crowded in the units that are still open. 520 is a big area and had lots of hunters late season.

Weyco closes access in the early seasons in 520 due to "fire danger". Then open the gates during modern season, rifle hunters (aka weyco employees) have free range. They pulled 80 bulls out of 520 last year. I guess somehow wdfw thought the archery guys were to blame. Amazingly, they didn't cancel the modern season for the unit this year.  :bash:

This used to be kind of true . Not the case since it went to permit . They havent closed for fire danger during season since it went permit .
Elk numbers are definately in the crapper . Shadow of what it used to be .

I feel the pain.  Winston used to be good.  Even late season when Bulls walked by me and no cows!  Not the case now.  Its an example of whats to come for the rest of this states management of elk.
MAGA!  Again..

A big reason the numbers are down in Winston and the surrounding units is the amount of cow tags they've passed out the last few years. I think it was 440 for Winston alone with all hunts combined. Now you've got the game department going in during the off season and shooting limping elk and it doesn't help a bit. The game dept. in this state is a farce. There's some good people that work there but the upper echelons like so much government has their heads where the sun don't shine.

Its not just the Winston.  SW Washington elk is in a bad way.  The Coweeman is but a shell of its former self.  The toutle is hurting, etc. etc. etc.  I have opted to not buy the acces permit for St. Helens tree farm this yr.  and lack of elk is the main reason.  The fact that I'm hunting out of state may have made that decision easier, but I just dont see it getting any better any time soon.
