Hunting near Gig Harbor
« on: April 28, 2018, 12:48:10 PM »
Hi Everyone! I just moved to Gig Harbor and am excited to check out the hunting nearby. Maybe somewhere I could take a day trip and be able to get back to the  house in the evening. Maybe GMU 633? I would love to hear if and what is available near my new home! Thanks.

Seems like Gig Harbor is one giant deer park. Get to know your neighbors, you may have an easier archery season right in your backyard.   :twocents:

Welcome to the Olympic Peninsula. You are very close to lots of hunting areas-national forest land, DNR land and tree farm land. Get a map, do some scouting. No end of places to explore.

I’ve lived just a few miles south of Gig Harbor for about 8 or 9 years.

Most years I spend big dollars on tags, gas, food, gear, etc....just to hunt deer 200+ miles away. Usually I see some deer, every few years I kill one, but every damn year, I nearly hit a nice buck with my truck right in front of my house. Often on the drive home from hunting in camp. Lol.

Lots of beautiful country to explore in this state but there are a ton of deer in most backyards on the West side of the bridge.

Welcome and have fun.

If you’d like to grab a beer or hear about mediocre hunting areas, give a holler.

Message me here. I check the site every now and then.

Here’s one I saw while running the cushman trail last spring.

I don't know about all that, but I did pull a card yesterday from out Kitsap way and found  this dude has been traipsing through the area for a few days recently.  None of the bucks out there have had any signs of eyeguards in the past few years, but this dude seems to be growing a stellar set.  The right side is looking like 3 inches and still growing,  He looks to be 3 - 4 years old, maybe 5 with wishful thinking.

He’s gonna be a giant! Hopefully you can hunt that area come this fall. Definitely gonna be a wall hanger!

Probably nowhere near the size of Mallardmasher's five point toad, but my eyes did bulge a bit when I first saw him.  It's hard to judge mass while they're in velvet, especially in May, but he's showing a lot of promise.  This is the same spot where all the bucks were forkies that I posted about last year, and not one eyeguard in the bunch.  I just get the feeling watching it that I haven't seen him before, though it's hard to tell.

I'm hoping my camera is still there in July when I go check it next.  Two, possibly three bears came through that spot on Friday, and though they left the cam alone that day, they've messed it up pretty well in the past.   I didn't hang it too well either, just propped a stick behind it to set the angle I wanted, but it was a bit loose.  If the bears hit it, it will be out of position (or gone) for most of the summer (like last year - here's part of the attack, just for fun!)

Just moved out this way last year. I’m in the same boat! Ton of stuff on the peninsula to explore...just hard to detach from the old spots, 3 hrs away.

If that beer session happens, let me know!
