All the adult ones I've seen that got away went at least 350.  Only been able to tag the little ones.  :chuckle:

I have bears regularly standing near my 50 gallon barrels on my acreage.   As does my large lab.  Based on actual measured live weight of the lab, and the neighborhood bears size in comparison to the bear in the photo.....my guess is about 300lbs live weight for that bear.....IF that is a 50 gallon or larger barrel.

The Axiom of bears:  all bears are big except the ones killed and weighed. :tung:

It is hard to judge weight by a photo, and only one of these pics shows much about his size... but I'd agree with the 300 lb. or more guess.  And then only believe it if it is a scale weight rather than estimate.  Wish we had a profile of the whole bear and a view of the bear's head with it looking straight and level at the camera.  300 lbs. is a big bear, especially in spring.

Most bears that I see in hunter pics are not nearly as big as the weight claimed, and virtually all of the weights are estimates.  I forgive a guide for guessing big to make his client feel good.

I’ve handled quite a lot of bears in the past 50 years, not concentrated on big ones most of that time.  I'm sure that two of those bears weighed well over 400 lbs.  One of those was 9 miles from the trail head in the North Cascades, and very careful estimates convinced me that it weighed 460 lbs.  It was a super fat Fall bear and the measured hide went 6' 9”.  You may cheerfully put that weight in the roll-our-eyes estimates category.  The other huge bear was on Vancouver Island, fattest bear I've handled and hide just over 7'.  We only packed it ½ mile and weighed parts of it the next day, so it goes in the estimates also.

Bravo on you to find this bear.  IIWY I'd stay after him!  If circumstances permit weighing him, please do so and tell us the fact.

When the legs appear short, the head appears small, and it looks like the bear is mostly body you are looking at a big bear. Photos can be deceiving, but I don't think there is a bear photo posted after the first post that is as big. I hope the OP gets this bear just so we all find out how heavy it is!

Just to add a little fun, I'll bet a brick of .22 that bear is closer to 400 than 200 or 300, provided the OP gets the bear and weighs it, any takers?

I'm with you.  Look up some of the huge bears that have come off the Quinalt.  Big skulls and fat bodies.  I would agree that this bear is close to 400.  Yes, most people overestimate the weight of bears, but look at the width of this guy at the shoulders.  Look at his girth at this early date.  This is a very nice bear.

Obviously that bear has been hitting the daily all you can eat at the casino before hitting the blue drum diner.

I'm going to take your bet, just because of my original guess.  (270 Lbs.)

I have been in on a number of bear kills, so I feel pretty confident.

I would not bet against you on this one. ;) I was conservative as to what I really think he will weigh when I agreed that I think he will go over 300.  Sure hope we get a scale weight on this one!

Many assume this "spring" bear should be 25% lighter than a fall bear but have ya thought maybe he doesn't sleep all winter?  Being coastal with mild weather and possibly plenty of food might explain his size?  I dunno but I don't see how that bear could be less 300lb.  I don't see a record monster but I do see a large May bear. Genetics of the area support that as well.  Maybe they are fed during winter to support size and hunting customers? :dunno:
MAGA!  Again..

Here’s some perspective. These are true behemoths. 20+” skulls and 6.5-7.5’ tall.

Just goes to show you that bears just AREN’T that big.

Yes...there’s been some fatty apple eaters over the years...but mostly on the east coast.

Average mature sows are 135 with boar being 165.  Sorry if you want them bigger.

I’d put this bear at 225-30.  Couple more weeks of eating donuts though and who knows...

I bet the OP bear is every bit as big as those bears. The bears you pictured only look that huge because of camera angles. That is some very flattering photography.

  Done deal, it will be fun to see if we get a weight, good luck to the hunter, it's a dandy bear no matter what the weight turns out to be!

Luckily B&C has solved this weight problem for us by not considering weight at all. As you all know, bears are scored by skull size and I’m guessing that bear will go over 20”.
