Carrying sidearm while scouting/hunting/etc
« on: May 23, 2018, 06:34:09 AM »
If you carry in the woods, where (on your person) do you carry? I haven't had a lot of experience with this, but I was wondering if a belt OWB carry position would get snagged on stuff, and at least with my setup the idea of putting in multi-mile trips with a heavy sidearm on my hip seems annoying.

I know some backpacks have handy little spots for sidearms which shifts the weight a bit. Post with your experiences!

Look at a Diamond D chest holster.  They are nice.  Especially when carrying a bigger gun (revolver etc).  Works great with a backpack on.  I do carry on my hip often times.  I prefer a crossdraw when packing on my hip (Easy to sit down with pistol on).  The only holster style I hate when I'm in the thick woods, is thigh rigs they catch on everything.

Paddle holster for me or if I’m running a pack with a decent waist belt it goes on that, never leave home without it, it saved my ass last spring

Can you run a chest holster rig with a bino harness? Thats always been my concern with those setups

Personally I would NEVER carry a sidearm on/in a pack or a pack harness. Too many ways to go FUBAR. Carry it on your belt or somehow attached to your person. I'm interested in the chest harness idea and plan to look into it. Carrying on the waste is always a problem with a pack but certainly doable. I have tried a leg holster that puts the gun below the packstrap but just didn't feel right flopping around my leg.

i always have my pack on so my sidearm is on the waist belt. I used to carry just on belt of pants but that was annoying when I had my pack's waist belt locked down

This is what I use, and I love it.  Doesn't interfere with my bino's or pack and it's always right there and easy to draw out if needed.

I carry my revolver in the Diamond D chest holster.   Easy to reach, and I like it better than hip/leg holsters I used in the past.

I only carry my pistol for archery, muzzleloader, and for scouting trips.  I don't carry my pistol for modern firearm.   For modern firearm I wear my binocular harness for my larger Nikon binoculars.  For archery and muzzleloader I have a compartment on the hipbelt of my backpack that holds my smaller Vortex binoculars.   These two setups work for my purposes.

On my belt. If I'm wearing a pack that has a waist belt then I use a Safariland belt drop holster.

Lewy, is there a story about "last spring" on here?

Safariland molle coupler for an Uncle Mikes Kydex for G20 on backpack belt or Simply Rugged chest holster for the heavier stuff.

Otherwise, a simple Galco Cop Leather OWB or kydex paddle holster, if I don't have a backpack belt going over it for a smaller semi-auto.
