Suspect Bear Weight
« on: May 24, 2018, 04:24:12 PM »
Tyler Freel posted this today.  Heís killed a LOT of critters. (11 fall sheep).  Besides the fact that he killed it with a stone arrow head and stick bow.

Final score was 7í squared bear, 19 1/4Ē skull, and live weighed at....248 lbs.

Please subtract at least 100 lbs from all your guesstimates.

I know youíre brothers friend said it was 300+.  It wasnít.

Preach Tyler.

Is this a spring bear? If so that weight will change dramatically by fall

Skull measurements are the only numbers that count. Not sure why weight is always brought up.

If some guy came on here claiming his buck was 195Ē when it was clearly 130-40Ē you wouldnít expect him to get grief? Thereís multiple bears right now posted in the bear forum that are insanely off.

If you didnít weigh him on a scale, donít post the weight is all Iím saying.

Why donít we ever get guys to show skull measurements? It literally takes 5 min and 2 2x4s.

If your so worried about it call them out individually. Instead you start a thread and make a comment that will be read by some people who have probably forgotten about more bears than youíve seen.

This seems like a better spot to have a discussion than on someoneís thread. I take this as an informational post.

Most bears are severely over estimated when it comes to weight and overall size in general.

Everyone I know has seen a 300# bear, the truth is they are probably 150# bears.

Yep, skull is really the only benchmark that can be reliably measured on most bears. I have ďheardĒ of plenty of 500+ lb. bears, but weight is pretty subjective on all but a few bears I have ever been in on. I have been in on a few fall hunts over the last few years with skull measurements ranging from ~17 12/16Ē - 19 7/16Ē and not one weighed over 300 lbs.  I harvested a huge fall sow that had over 80 lbs of boned meat in the quarters and back straps, probably 250-300 live weight, skull only went a little over 17Ē though.

Didnít have a scale but the four of us that it took to carry him up the hill all agreed he was at least 300 lbs.  maybe he was only 250 but the thing was damn heavy.

Thatís in my top 3 favorite bears Iíve seen in Washington.  I wouldnít bat an eye saying that was at or near guesstimated weight.  Was there ever a skull size on that guy?

Official score is right at 20Ē.  Tooth aging was 15 years old.  Going to pick up the skill and mount in a month or two.

That is an absolute stud bear. Last year I had a spring bear tag and the last day we hunted I saw a super stud right before dark. Wish I could have stayed one more day Iím sure I could have got him. Now he haunts my dreams from time to time. The picture of canines bear reminds me of him

Yes Wyoming.  I saw a bear deep in the wenaha three years ago this June that was in this same class. I didnít have my phone scope so only have images in my mind of that Bear.  Iím backpacking back into my camp in two weeks and if I see him I will post up some pics.  Iím overdue for a wenaha spring tag so have to rely on some mock hunts.

I have posted this before but will say it again. Carry a cloth measuring tape and measure the girth and length of the bear. Also weigh  4 legs bone in but minus the paws. I believe that based on a bear weight chart if you multiply the weight of the legs times 3.3 that will be pretty close to the live weight. In any case it is easy to weigh the legs and at least that figure can be reported for those interested in such things. I have killed 11 bears and have been with friends for quite a few more. Some certainly bigger than others. My biggest was a 13 year old boar from the Wenaha 20" skull, hide squared 6' 10" and legs weighed 120#. The hide with skull weighed 80#.

The bear in my Avatar pic is a younger, smaller boar. I shot it with my Ruger Bisley 45 Colt in the Dayton unit May of 2007. The skull was not quite 18" IIRC. It was 7 years old.

Rufous, I remember that formula from similar discussions last year.

Do you happen to have some pictures of that 20Ē stud? Almost a 7í...itís what Iím holding out for on my next tag.
