Park, hike 1.5 miles up a beautiful drainage of old growth and ferns. See no other hunters. Kill bull and pack it out. I didn't make it the full 1.5 though. I killed my bull at .5.

Ask for Trophy Hunt.  The man is a one man wrecking machine when it comes to knowledge of the infamous white river elk herd

The good- you drew the tag
The bad- you don’t know the unit
The ugly- you asked about it on your first post
 :chuckle:

In all honesty I hope you have a great time!

I guess I should have added a bit about me. My bad. Lol. Western Washington native out of olympia. Been chasing elk for 12 years, mainly with a muzzleloader. Picked up bow hunting elk 3 years ago and harvested 2 bulls since. I’m not looking for honey holes. Just looking for starting point.
I’m willing to wear out a set of boots if I have to. I appreciate everyone’s responses.

Lots of experience on here.  I live about 1 minute away from GMU 653, but I have never pulled the elk tag.  A few others will likely send you a PM as there has been a lot of success in there.

No elk in that unit. People should just stop putting in for it...

My advice would be to start getting in shape now.  The elk are vocal and respond but not aggresive.

If y'all want to have a discussion on the White River and the Muckleshoot tribe and the management of this herd and their practices or whatever, start a new thread. If anyone is interested in responding to the OP's questions with some reasonable and legitimate information, feel free.
Otherwise, consider this a warning to anyone else derailing threads and turning them into pissing matches.

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

Good move Jackalope. My advice is drive part way up then hunt up from there. There's a ton of drive up-hunt down in that unit. If you happen to make it up to Corral Pass, then you've driven past the bull of a lifetime or want to hunt down from the road. Or haven't gone up 410 far enough. But what does an eastern guy know?
Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!
