Just walk along the river shouldn’t take more than a half hour lots of hoof rot so make sure it’s walking right before you shoot.

I drew the Quality muzzleloader tag and wouldn't mind a little recon information.

My 12 year old son drew the Youth Cow permit...he also has the multi-season elk so maybe he will fill it with a bull in the general season's in other GMU's but he's pretty stoked for the Mudflow hunt...he's killed 4 deer (probably 6 by the time his elk hunt starts as he has a 2nd deer tag this year and the multi-season deer as well).

Yup, got the same tag.

I went up there last Sunday and took a look at the south section of the unit from the 3000 road.

From Toutle, take the South Toutle River Rd to the 4100, to the 4200, to the 4250 and it will run straight into the 3000.  DM me and I can send you a GPS .gpx file of it.  It takes a good 40 minutes from Toutle to the 3000.

I'll be up there several more times this summer.

I hunted up there last year during muzzleloader season. For a cow tag I would stay up near the castle lake trail, we were able to spot a lot of elk from just off the trail. For the bull tag I would stay down by the river. We did see a few bulls up high near the trail, but nothing that big. All of the bigger bulls we saw were down near the river.

Can you access the trail from the Toutle side or just on the hiking trail from the flats?

You can almost make it to the Castle Lake Trail via the 3000 road.  As far as I can tell, you have to park right where the 3860 cuts off to the NW and go on foot from there.  I'm gonna try it out on the 25th.  You're welcome to join me or I will report back to this thread and let you know if it is possible.
