Mounting transducer bracket on jon boat
« on: July 18, 2018, 07:00:08 PM »
Does anyone know a good fast setting adhesive to mount the transducer bracket on my jon boat? I’d prefer to not drill holes, but I guess I may have to. I tried the loctite marine epoxy today & that stuff is junk. Takes 3 hours for it to set up. In hindsight, I should have read the back of the package before I bought it. There’s no way to clamp it & I obviously can’t sit there and hold a slow setting adhesive. Thanks for any tips.

My first suggestion would be drilling.  I did that with my aluminum V 15 years ago and it is still holding.  Use good quality hard rubber or plastic washers on each side and you should be fine.  If gluing, go with one of the heavy duty 3M marine adhesives.  I glued in a small piece of plywood into my bigger glass boat for a 2nd bilge pump 5 years ago and I don't think I could pry that thing off today.

That is the difference in fiberglass and aluminum. You can make permanent attachments to fiberglass, but aluminum is much more resistant to adhesion due to its rate of oxidation. About any adhesive, paint, or coating will come off aluminum before other substrates.

Not sure why you don’t want to drill holes, but that is the only sure way to attach something to aluminum. You could build a bracket that attaches to the transom, but that is a pain.

Use silicone and adhere a piece of 2x4. Seal the 2x4 before siliconibg it to the transom.

I personally would not use wood.
Apoxy the flat surface then silicone the border of a 1/2"-3/4" thick piece of uhmw (think cutting board material). Can be found at most machine/plastic Fab shops. Screw your transducer into it. if you can't find a piece, buy a cutting board, or go to Amazon or Cabela's and search plastice transducer mounts to avoid drilling into boat. Use some sort of etching primer on aluminum. I also screwed my uhmw to the boat and the expoy and border silicon seals it completely and you will never have an issue.

3M 5200 will stick to aluminum, and never come off. It sealed up many rivets in my old smokercraft sled, as well as some small electrolysis caused holes in the sides. Even if you end up screwing it on, I would strongly suggest putting a layer of 5200 as well. You won’t need rubber washers or anything with the 5200, just put a little in the hole before you tighten the screws down.

I just drilled, used silicon gasket material and screwed it on. Haven't had a leak in several years. I also covered the screws on the inside with silicon. The screws I used were black coated and have not corroded.

How thick is your hull? Can you mount on the floor shoot through? Slow setting epoxy will work

Have you personally used this by chance?
If so, what's your thoughts on the strength vs thickness of boat material?
The gears on turning and what all I could do with that mount depending on it's strength, especially under power.

I've not, but the videos look impressive. I have one of their mounts for my frameless pontoon.
Give them a call they are very helpful on the phone.

I have an aluminum Lund, I used a product called Stern Saver, I believe. It's a plastic mounting bracket that comes with a special epoxy, and you glue it on without drilling any holes in your boat. Then you screw the transducer onto the plastic bracket, and the screws are short so they don't go into your boat. It's worked really well so far, I have the mini version, I think it's like $30. Plenty of room for a Hummingbird Helix DI transducer.

You could also use HDPE or UHMW or something, essentially a thick cutting board. The Stern Saver has a few holes in the back where you put the glue – I'd take a look at it and do holes like that if you decide to build one yourself. Maybe also consider something like JB Weld – I don't think that stuff would ever come off.

5200 or mount it to your electric motor shaft
