Wild boar in Iraq?
« on: August 03, 2018, 11:31:49 AM »
Any Iraq Veterans ever see a wild boar in the sandbox? While over there some years ago during a convoy I caught a glimpse of what I thought was a huge boar. It was around midnight headed north on Tampa in the big empty just south of Baghdad. I talked to some of my solder/Hunter compadres and they thought I was crazy. I did some research and it turns out that there are wild boars in that part of the world. I googled this and there were several articles saying the 3 Terroists were killed by a large boar. I am just curious if anyone else saw one over there.

On my last tour to Baghdad (2008-2009) one of the land owners that I knew on the east side of the city had wild boars running around and causing damage to his farm.  Some of the guys in 3-82 had an opportunity to go shoot some of them, but the farmer would not touch the dead ones.  The troops brought them back to FOB Loyalty and roasted them over broken pallets for the rest of their company. Stranger things over there.

Back when I was in the Air Force one of the guys in my unit had been stationed in Turkey.    He went on a boar hunt, they were successful and did the BBQ thing also.

But he and several of the others contracted trichinosis.  Took him a long time to get rid of the parasite.  He was wasting away, almost died.

Wild boar in that area of the world have been carrying the trichinosis parasite for thousands of years.   I would not touch one of the critters, much less eat the meat!!

In the 60s my Dad killed a wild boar while stationed in Turkey.  We all ate the meat, it was great.  I was with my Dad at Izmir AB in the 60s.

Never saw the boars, but glad to hear they notched out three terrorists

I only took Tampa south a few times.  For the most part we were inner-city kids and occasionally we'd go west toward Fallujah or north toward Taji.  Going north was awesome, the FOB up there had a Green Bean

I know there were some of the areas in and around Baghdad that had Christian settlements and they raised pigs. During the war, a lot of the farms were destroyed and a lot of the pigs got lose. And a lot of Chinese up in the Sulaymaniyah area and they had a lot of pigs. But that is way north of Baghdad. Possible the were domestic pigs? Also, did have fun shooting camel spiders.
It's only trouble if you get caught. Otherwise it is an adventure.

I ran into wild boar several times while there, mostly in the tall grass/reeds along the Tigris, or in the orchids nearby. (Most of my time there was in Salah ad Din Province (Balad, Samarra, Tikrit area)

Afghanistan we had a patrol stalked by a mt. Lion. Watched it on the thermals. Those countries are crazy once the sun sets.
May my presence go unnoticed, may my shot be true, may the blood trail be short.

This surprised me.  I didn't think mt lions were there, I know leopards are there.

We got pictures of a snow leopard at one of the FOBs we shut down. The raid cameras picked it up. I wonder if there’s anything new about cougars in Afghanistan. It was 2013 we saw it. Hogs in Iraq though kinda surprise me, thought that was satan over there.

Forgot about the green bean coffee! Never saw a boar. Lots of dogs. Saw some kind of badger once and a weird looking cat.

Yup. My platoon killed two in Tarmiya in 09. Cooked them the next day.
