Chelan Wolverine
« on: August 14, 2018, 05:10:44 PM »
https://www.ncwlife.com/rare-wolverine-spotted-in-remote-chelan-county/

Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife Chelan District Biologist, Dave Volsen recently received this image from the trail camera of a bear hunter who wanted to confirm they are wolverines. Volsen confirmed that they are indeed wolverines.  Volsen and other staff are working with the hunter to establish a hair-snagging station in the area to retrieve a DNA sample for further documentation of Washington’s rare wolverine population.

I saw a wolverine on Boulder Pass out of Curlew one day in my chip truck. The WDFW denied it was one, as usual. Talked to a couple of fellas that had seen them in the same area. Been here for years. I don't believe anything that comes out of the WDFW mouths.

Would be a cool pic to get on your game cam!

I’m surprised they don’t import a bunch of them, they’ll fit right in with the wolves, bears, grizz, cougar and the rest of their predator management (or lack there of) program. I was surprised to read that wolverines prey on animals as big as moose!

I seen one outside of Twisp on the backside of Powder Mountain about 15 years ago. We were recovering a deer one of my buddies shot and all 3 of us seen it plain as day. I always assumed they were around, just not a high density of them. :dunno:

Got a trail cam pic of one in 2009 in Chelan county, lots of reports of them up there for years.  They are definitely here and established.

No kidding - that was my first thought after looking at the photo.  Not news they are in the county but rare to get photo confirmation of reproduction, and DNA will be the best opportunity to get a population estimate.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

There was a pair of them outside of Eburg for a couple years.  I never got a photo of them.  I did see a Fisher in Twisp last year.  That was cool!

The USFS was collaring them in the Methow a few years ago.  There are more out there then most people realize! And they do travel farther then the researchers understood, too!!

You really should consider ALL the options before you rush to judgment.  :chuckle:

Sorry for the derail, back on topic. Super cool animals, I'd love to see a few more around, and would really enjoy watching one do whatever wolverines do in the mountains when no ones looking. Chase stuff, maul stuff, eat stuff, scare stuff?

This makes my day!  I completely agree.  I believe they mostly eat kills of other animals.  Marty Stouffer on Wild America had video of them chasing away wolves and grizzlies from kills the bigger predators had made.

I also think that's their deal, although I'm sure they have no problem taking down an average size deer if they get the opportunity.

“The WDFW denied it was one, as usual...”

I find it very hard to believe a wildlife biologist would “deny” any possible wolverine sighting. I saw one 6 years ago while backcountry skiing and the biologist I talked to went out the next day with cameras and bait
