If you are looking at a quality hunt and a big buck, MT is probably not the best bet.  That state is managed for opportunity, you can get out and hunt mule deer in the rut with a rifle nearly every year if you want.  I would look south of MT if a quality buck was on the list.  If you want to hunt every year and see deer, MT is a good option.

Alaska is also over the counter for deer. Not cheap any more, but still over the counter.

I hunt Upstate New York. The license is $100 and doe tags are $10 and transferable.
I will be flying there this Thursday for two weeks. I just bought my round trip ticket for $302 a couple of days ago. I should of bought it last week for  $253.

Last year was good, we took two bucks and two does. Could of shot more, but how much do you need.

The hunting license is small game/big game. So once we get the deer hunting done we go duck & goose hunting.
There is a butt load of deer there and tons of state land with lots of open private land. I bought one hunting license here in Washington state, never sgain.
Pennsylvania is a good bargain as well. $101 for your license and a huge butt load of deer with excellent state land threw out the state. I like hunting Susquahanna and luzerne counties there.

I got into New York state last night at midnight. I will be going to a semi local.gun shop in a couple of hours to pick a few things up then to Walmart to get a hunting license and maybe a doe tag. Tomorrow morning I will be out before daylight at the spot I will be set up at waiting for 7am to arrive.
They had around eight inches of snow yesterday.

Alabama.  Many units you can shoot 3 deer per day throughout all 3 seasons and an out of state license is $136 for 3 days, $193 for 10 days or $312 for  WHOLE YEAR!!  When I was back at my land in 2010 before I sold it I shot a nice 4x4 (10 pointer) with a shotgun in less than an hour.  I think I payed $125 for a 3 day tag back then.  I could have taken 9 deer.  Not a bad little whitie for only an hours worth of hunting.

Sometimes I wish that I hadn't sold my 80 acres but I still have about 3 square miles of cousins land to hunt if I ever get back there again.  Tons of turkeys and quail as well.

Pennsylvania. $101. Buy it at 0500 on Monday morning (Opening day) and shoot one at daylight 2 1/2 hours later.

Timeline was a little off, but I bought my license about midnight before opening day, and got this buck 6 days latter; an 11 point counting it the correct way  :chuckle:

Pennsylvania is always a good time! Love the prices on licences too. Hope they keep the opener on the first Monday after Thanksgiving and not move it to Saturday.

@ Nice Racks...Was a bit soggy on the opener this year before it turned to snow...

Yes it was. I spent the 1st day in a warm and dry shooting house, and only seen about 20 deer.  Spent the rest of the week in a warm and dry shooting house until the rains returned on Saturday,  when one finally showed up.

This is the 1st year I didn’t get drawn for MT sense 2000. Been hunting there sence 1996. The east side is real good for good muly’s. Been all over the state and found the Fort Peck area to be the best. 24 -26” are no problem if you get away from the road
