My rifle is having a weird accuracy problem
« on: September 23, 2018, 10:28:44 PM »
I went out to shoot my rifle today (7mm-08 savage) and put 3 shots in a 2inch grouping at 200 yards, then let the gun cool down, came back and shot another and it threw it about a foot low. let the gun sit for a bit and it did the same exact thing again  :bash:. The gun has probably 5 boxes total through it since new, and we always clean it after every shoot. It has a nikon prostaff 3x9 for a scope. So my question is, do you guys think its the scope, scope mounts, or the gun.

Loose ring or mount would be my guess

So it shot the next shot a foot low or it shot the next group a foot low? Then did it again was it the same or just close?
First to check is always the screws.  Make sure every screw is Torqued.

so it will shoot like a group of 3 in like two inches and then throw a few wild ones, low all over the place, I checked my scope mounts while I was out there but maybe its slipping?

if you were close by I’d invite you over to get it figured out.  Have you had some one else shoot it?  A foot low saysscope issue for sure but I have seen flinch issues the same though more often right or left not low.  At 200 yards a foot is 6 moa which I have seen close to that with bad barrel contact with the stock or rest.    I have not seen that much shift with trigger or crown issues ime.  That fact that it’s after the cold group makes me think barrel contact or scope issue.  Parallax won’t throw it off that far and that fact that is groups once says not a trigger issue or flinch. If a fundamentals issue it wouldn’t group with out flyers.  Do you have a different scope to try?

I don't know if the following information applies to you, but I just got through dialing in my Savage Model 10 in 308. Similar issues; group a couple, throw a flyer, no pattern. It has the plastic stock, so I ground out the honeycomb in the fore end and epoxied two 1/4" steel rods in the channel to stiffen it.  Then I bedded the action with JB Weld.  First 3 shot group after the mods was .55" ,  Consistent .75" shooter now.

I would really like to blame it on a 7-08 thing. :)

Were you shooting the same ammunition you have always shot or shot prior?
