Good luck to all!
« on: October 18, 2018, 08:34:30 PM »
New user, 1st post, and 1st time elk hunting! All the pics look great guys. Looking forward to learning and hopefully making a few new friends. I'm hunting GMU 346 Naches, camped and deer hunted in that area since I was a kid. Plan to cover as much ground as I can and hope luck is on my side can't wait! Good luck to everyone, stay safe and happy hunting.

Thanks guys! Leaving this coming Thursday can't wait to get some boots on the ground. I am pretty familiar with the area so I think I will be good there however, I will be using a lever action Marlin 30-30 which is the same gun I use for deer. My question if anyone can help is, should I stick with my 150 grain (what I use for deer) or maybe go up to a 170?? Again, 1st time elk Hunter so not exactly sure and have seen lots of different answers so any and help is very much welcomed and appreciated!

Spend some time on reading a little about the 170 grain. If it sounds promising, see how it shoots out of your rifle I read a few things saying. 150 would be better for certain game with my 270, but ended up sticking with and being happier with 130. It doesnt matter how much bigger the bullet is if you cant hit where you aim.  :twocents:

In the end, it is all about bullet placement. No matter what caliber, if the bullet misses the vital areas, it will be considered a miss.

Appreciate the info! I decided to go with 170 hrain federal premium. Went out to the Plantation long range near Bellingham yesterday and sighted in to 100yds.  Couldn't agree more that shot placement above all else is key! Grabbed my tag today and I'm all set, the countdown begins :IBCOOL:
