Any Squid Yet?
« on: October 19, 2018, 01:01:18 PM »

Anybody been out for squid yet?
I was out over at the Edmond's Pier the other day just to see if anyone was catching any crab (fall season opened) and one guy was out there (Asian) with his light and a generator four hours before dark.  I asked him if the squid were running and has he got any lately.  He didn't speak English  :o  and never really answered my question.  So have anyone been out and how are you doing?

I haven't been out myself yet this year but a couple guys at work have and said they are doing pretty good.  I have also heard and read a few pretty decent reports too.  I need to get out there SOON.  You were talking about Edmonds, I am not sure up there.  Stuff I have been hearing about has been Seattle, Des Moines, Redondo and down around Tacoma.

Quite a few people squidding on the Seattle waterfront tonight. Didn’t see how well they were doing.
There is not enough wilderness left in the world, or in the hearts of men.

Seals can really put the brakes on the bite when they show up.

I always hear of people squid jigging on the piers around Seattle/Tacoma but never around the peninsula. Is it possible on the peninsula on the Hood Canal, or is is it mostly just in the Sound?

Watermans pier in Port Orchard is a good spot.  Don't even need to bring a lattern the pier is light up.

Please excuse the ignorance, but what kind of set up would I need to try for squid? Can I use a salmon/steelhead rod?  I've been wanting to try for squid for some time now but don't know where to start.  I work second shift so it's perfect for me shoot over to Edmonds ferry pier after work and give it a try.

A steelhead rod would work just fine, maybe put some 6 lb test on it so your lure sinks a little faster. Go up to Ted’s tackle shop up on 99 in Lynnwood and talk to the guys up there on what jigs a working these days. They should set you up with some good options. Edmonds fishing pier should be pretty good right now. Good luck!

Only.place I ever tried was at the edmonds pier... Grandpa lived just a mile up the road from it so it was always a winter time thing as a kid....

That was then, this is now...

I live up in the anacortes/Whidbey area and have wondered if they are any around my area. Can i go out with a genset and some lights and try it out or is there a reason why there are a ton of squid southbound?

I have been on the Coleman dock project in Seattle.  Every night there is about a half dozen boats with light out there.  Seen them catching a few lately.
