407 unit--large buck
« on: October 23, 2018, 11:30:28 AM »
Please help me again.  been going out to this unit and finally found a large buck, probably a monster black tail buck for this area, but i need advice- I spooked the animal while it was just eating inside the bush but I saw it as it leaped about 5 times away from me and it was 6.30 p.m. already and the light almost gone, but it looked like medusa --so awesome, my hearth dropped to my toes in one second, but it was gone!!!

been going back and I can't find it. I need to know what I can do to find it? cause I know it hangs out in this area, but I am not an experienced hunter...I want it so bad I am losing sleep at night!!! I am actually thinking about this animal a lot. anything you can advice me will help me.

Blacktail move with the wind and cover. read Byod Iversons Blactail Trophy tactics 2

I would hang rags soaked in mule deer or blacktail esterus .... give it a day or two before you go back in there to do that , holloween is coming and those bucks set there clocks to it .

Sit from dark to dark. Most boring thing I have ever done but you will be there when the animals move. And if they don’t we’ll go back the next day and do it again. This method works if you have the patience.

Best time of the year for Blacktail is coming up quick, we have some weather moving in and the rut is starting to kick off. Spend as much time in the area as you can and be patient. Utilizing trail cams might not be a bad idea either so you can get an idea of what trails he is using or not using. Good luck

Tree stands are a great way to get a better view, more comfortable for sitting and help reduce scenting by deer. hard for lots of fols to sit for a long time in the thick.

I've had some good access with tree stands but it's my least favorite way to hunt. I typically go out before first light, sit until lunch time and come back in in time for breakfast  :chuckle:

Ive both rifle hunted and bow hunted out of tree stands in Western WA. Ive only killed them with a bow that way however. IMO the problem with a rifle is that I have felt the need to be able to see a long distance so that i had a higher success chance of seeing or shooting one. If you read Iversons book he talks about how he killed most of his deer well within bow range. Ive been up 50 ft in a tree able to look into re-prod before at range but sill have not seen much...
