Need advice on GMU's in Blue Mountains (WA) for Elk in 2019.
« on: November 08, 2018, 10:35:54 AM »
My elk hunting group (Modern Firearm, Eastern) has dwindled in size down to two due to relocation, etc. The group has always hunted in GMU 340 (South of Ellensburg/Cle Elum) but with just two of us left, both retired, we would like to consider relocating to a public land location in the Blue Mountains, east of Walla Walla. We would appreciate any advice on where to locate a camp and hunt, if you are comfortable sharing that advice. This is not an attempt to ferret out anyone's secret honey hole, just a general introduction to the area...….which we would follow up on by making a scouting trip in Spring/Summer.

Both of us will be sitting on 16/17 Branched Bull points next season and several cow points. We also have a 14' x 16' Davis internal frame wall tent, with wood burning stove that will easily accommodate 5 hunters and an extended framed cooking/storage area that is Approx. 14' x 18'. Our request for information also includes an offer for 2-3 hunters to possibly join us in sharing a camp and our tent......if that would fit into your plans/needs, please consider this request. Our past practice has always been to share any harvested meat equally between any hunters in camp that contribute to the overall work and effort of camp chores and getting the animal back to camp.

Again, we would appreciate any advice and comments.

Have made 2 trips for guided elk meat hunts (spike, cow) on private land near Hepner, OR. That's it so far...….but am interested in other out of state hunts.

100%. Got spike first trip and cow the second. Buddy went on second trip and also got a cow. Believe it was Pioneer Outfitters.....no longer in Hepner......but at last report they are operating near La Grande. Very good at their job.

Blues are rugged man . Watershed is the worst unit down there . Dont waste your points in there . Most people leave after 2 or 3 days in there.  Only way in or out is straight down and straight back up . I've hunted west weneha and dayton a lot for elk . I can lend ya some tips if you need. Just message me !!!!!

This is a good thread. I'm headed down that way myself. I hit it 5 years ago, or so, and it was a dry hole. Bad weather, hunted hard, saw a cow and calf in 4 days. Hoping to move to a different area this year in the Blues for hopefully different results.
