Dumb question
« on: November 13, 2018, 03:54:36 PM »
Whats the legal safe distance to shoot a deer from any building or structure? Is it 200 ft or 200 yards?

I live out in country and got a big one that hangs around my yard...... My 20 gauge would do the trick just fine....

2 things if you are on your private property all you have to do is shoot in a safe direction. 200 ft has more to do with other folks homes and the road, and that is highly dependent on your neighborhood

as long as the house window is open it's time to shoot.

Make sure to remove the screen first  :chuckle:
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

Pffft! Who wouldn't sacrifice a screen for a nice elk or a big buck? :dunno: :chuckle:

I live in a "neighborhood" but its 1200+ ft between houses, I have a giant maple tree to use as a backstop, my yard opens up and in basically on the beach, so, if I use buck shot in a 20 gauge, migjt hVw a few pellets make it into the bay, but if I can line up a shot.... Might be heard, wont be seen....

Weve shot the 20 gauge off in the yard many times around 4th of july and new years, and a few other celebrations, neighbors havent said squat, everything ends up out on the bay anyway, and its not like any kayakers or swimmers will be out there in November...

I got a tag, legal safe distance, won't shoot til late season opens up.... Got basis covered right?

A quarter mile between houses ? No fire arms restrictions ? I would post up on the roof and blast him in the head with the seven mag. If you miss the bullet goes in the dirt and you need to practice shooting .

If I remember right Night goat lives in a firearm restricted area. 😉

"Legal" and "safe" distances are different. Unless it is locally regulated, there are generally no legally defined limits.

"Safe" is primarily determined by the direction you are shooting. A 20 gauge slug shot in the air at a 45 degree angle will go further than 1200 feet.

One other consideration is how far a wounded deer might run before dying.

Be aware of what is behind the animal when aiming and make a lethal shot, and you should be fine.
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.

20 ga. rifled slugs over shot IMHO.  You should be pretty accurate out to 75 yards or so.  A little practice would be a good idea.

I'm gonna jump on the slug bandwagon. I've seen two deer shot within 40 yds with buckshot. Neither were recovered. One I think was a good shot. The other I know was a good shot. Saw hair flying at the point of impact.
