Please post your life size cougar mount...
« on: December 02, 2018, 07:32:01 PM »
I put up a similar topic in the Taxidermy forum but hoping this thread will catch a bit more traction.

At the end of this month I’ll be starting a life long dream of chasing and hopefully tagging a mature Tom.  The area is well managed and the outfitter is very selective on which cats he takes, even limiting his harvests to 4 or so per year.  That said, the quality of the Tom’s he trees year in and year out for his clients are top tier.

In the event I’m lucky enough to tag a mature Tom, I plan on not cutting any corners and want the best, most realistic Taxidermy work avaialabe.  I haven’t settled in on a specific pose or setting yet as I’m still combing the internet looking for the right fit.

Please post a pic of your cat, along with Taxidermist name and a brief summary of your experience.  I have a go-to Taxidermist here in Spokane but honesty looking for someone who specializes in life sized mounts.  Thanks in advance, let’s see ‘em

What state are you going to be hunting? I would look for good taxidermist in that area to.

I leave tomorrow for my cougar hunt in Utah. If I end up with a good Tom I will be having it mounted in Utah. I think in general they see more cats and have more experience mounting them because they see them more. That’s I generally. There are some good taxidermy work done in Washington to. I will have over a year to figure out how to get it back home.

Be ready to spend. Cheapest person I have talked to start around$4000 for a life size. Talked to Philip Soucy. He starts at $4,900 add open mouth and habitat you can add another $1000+.

Enjoy your hunt.

I follow Roundy taxidermy (@Deerbedead) on social media, they're out of Utah and they do a lot of cats that turn out great. May want to check them out also.

Soucy is the top dog! Micheal White does excellent work! Johnny Gonzalez in Idaho is great, and Gary Attima in Post Falls (NW Taxidermy) is who I chose to do my cat from last year. He's on facebook and his attention to detail and attitude about getting it "right" resonated with me.

Western Washington cat my wife shot. Tanned by Buzzy twenty five years ago and mounted by Rick at Cedar River taxidermy about five years ago. My cougar from last year is in line to get mounted next.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

My form was supposed to be used on a rock setting similar to Rainier's, but I wanted it standing in a tree. After many miles searching, I found a tree that had limbs in the right places so the feet would match up to them.
Seeing as how the tree is twelve feet tall and extremely heavy, I took the bare form home and everything lined up really well, so gave the taxi. the go ahead to do it. We discussed facial expression and then tail position. I just told him to mount the tail in whatever position looked natural. Neither of us thought about where the tail would be once the mount was on the tree. OOOPPS.
Everything was great except the tail ended up going behind the main trunk, so I had to add a couple of branches to make it work.
I was supposed to add some moss to the tree, but 15 years later I still haven't.  :chuckle:

Very cool habitat NOCK.  I had that same form used on my first lifesize. Still one of my favorite forms for true cat behavior.

Best lion taxidermy ever was by Doug Eck. This site sucks for posting pics or else I would post one. Just contact Doug Eck Studios and get your checkbook out. He’s expensive, but well worth it.

I've never got a cougar, but hope to change that someday. I don't know who the taxidermist is, but this pose is different than you normally see.
