Protein/Snack bar recipes?
« on: March 05, 2019, 09:48:10 AM »
In an effort to get in better shape and eat healthier, the wife and I have been counting calories and trying to cut out as much processed food as possible. Due to convenience, kind bars have become one of the go to snacks. At the same time, I feel like baking our own protein or snack bars would have to be more cost effective than store bought varieties and probably better quality ingredients. Have any of you made your own or have recipes that you recommend? We aren’t as worried about high protein content, but more just a good tasting and healthy snack bar. Any ideas?

Ive had protein pancakes before that were pretty good. also theres one out there that's protein reeses peanut cups and a protein muffin as well. Really you have to target what your "problem food" is that's another big help and find healthy alternatives. I have a MAJOR sweet tooth so I buy the protein bars in the store that remined me of candy bars, helps a bit.

Drink lots of water too.

Honestly, I recommend instead of protein bars, building your own trail mix. I do that during hunting season and you can mix and match. Add things like almonds, dehydrated fruit, yogurt chips etc.

There is a thread about this somewhere, just couldn’t find it.

Yeah, I tried searching this board but didn’t find anything.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! The switch hasn’t been too difficult. We’ve always eaten semi healthy, but figured it would be beneficial to cut out the processed foods. Neither one of us are extremely over weight but figured a slight change in diet and increase in exercise is never a bad thing. Portion control has been the big thing, hence the calorie counting. And the changes so far seem to be helping.

I think the bigger things about making your own snacks is you can control what goes into them as well as it ends up saving you a good amount of money over time

At Fred Meyer you can find Ole' 60 calorie spinach or Tomato low carb flat tortilla's.  Fill with shredded cabbage. Add a dash of mango citrus grill sauce or some other low cal flavor.  Bit of chicken if you want.  Makes a less than 100 cal snack.  I like Kind bars but 200 cal bar vs a big bowl of Progresso Light Clam Chowder or Chicken Pot Pie at same calories I go for the soup.  Dannon Yogurts at 80 calories ( creme brulee even ) are good.

If you like them, Cauliflower flourets ( pieces) are about zero calories.  Splenda sweet Pickles actually are listed at zero calories.

Walk !  I find its hard to stay on task with diet unless I have an investment in it ( exercise ).

Good luck.  Just do it.

Thanks for the tips! I’m going to make some of the bars Antlershed posted up and go from there! It seems like most recipes have similar ingredients, so I’ll do a trial run and alter it as needed. I appreciate all the input.

No problem. I’ve been using cashews and actually skipping the dried fruit.
