Hawaii big island bow hunting.
« on: March 10, 2019, 06:54:56 PM »
Going to Kona for a week in the end of July. Planning on bringing my bow and hunting a couple mornings. Would prefer a DIY hunt, more interested in wild boar/pigs but open to sheep/goats if that would make a better spot and stalk hunt. Anyone have experience hunting the big island?

Not trying to be snarky.....use the search function.  Some pretty recent treads that may jumpstart your search.

Tried that, maybe I used the wrong search terms. All I found for the big island was a thread on parker ranch.

To get your hunting license you will need proof of your firearms safety/hunter safety training. If you don’t have it you won’t be able to get a hunting license.
I hog hunted on Kauai when I was there in January. I googled up a guide to hunt with. It was pretty expensive like everything else over there.

I got my exemption, all good to go for a license. Trying to figure out which area and species to focus on. I would much rather bring my bow, but could do rifle if that would make a big difference in being successful or not.

Haven't hunted the big island, but have hunted Kauai and Lanai. I will say that a rifle will dramatically increase your odds, but on such a cool and unique hunt, you'll have 10X more fun with a bow, even if you don't get anything. I rifle hunted once, and it was over real quick (there are a LOT of animals). If you just care about meat, rifle is OK. But if you want the better experience, bow is the way to go. Goats are a blast to spot and stalk!

If you have the time try to hook up with some locals and hunt boar with dog and knife the way they do it on the islands. It’s quite an adventure

That thing is saweet! Wish I knew about that when I went to Kauai last year. Didn't see anything terribly impressive for the big island, probably just get a wrangler.

I have always wanted to do that, not much in this world I enjoy more than hunting over some good dogs. I looked into it, found one guide service that does it, for $1,600. If I find some local hunters willing to take me I would jump on that

I’m headed to kona in October and I’m bringing my bow as well, I am also looking around trying to find some info as well, I have heard that you can get pointed in the right direction if you call the dnr office for the area you will be in.
