Snow in Colville National Forest
« on: March 14, 2019, 02:07:05 PM »
From southwest Washington, I always go up there opening week for Turkey, anybody up there care to share how deep the snow is and how much there still might be for the opener?

I know here in Moses, it's still around. And they are a higher elevation, and not supposed to get over 40s in the next week here.
Is it waterfowl season yet..............

Up in the south facing hills, in direct sunlight, it is melting fast.  In the shade, we still have about 18-24" accumulation, outside of the CNF in the hills.  I saw about 17 turkeys gathered up under a pine in the morning sun this morning.

I'll be headed up for the opener as well. Picked up a set of snowshoes. This may be my first chance to track turkey in the snow.

Hunting Turks in the snow can be a whole lotta fun. Getting your rig into the hills with all the snow may be a problem for the opener. Having some snowshoes handy is a good idea.

We still have a lot in most of my turkey spots! But with 50-60 degrees in the forecast and no freezing nights Iím thinking itíll be a muddy mess come opener. Too high up is still 2-3 feet when I was checking my trap yesterday. Though hunting em in the snow is pretty fun, up by empire lakes 2 years ago I found a good size flock and spent a few days chasing them around in the snow. I havenít been out of the Republic-curlew stretch in 3 weeks so I dunno how the colville side is looking.
May my presence go unnoticed, may my shot be true, may the blood trail be short.

Amen

A lot can happen in a month and if the weather keeps up a lot of snow can melt pretty fast.

This is year 10 for me too. I'm also in the same boat for leave. Can't change it now. I've spent most of the 10 years fall hunting turkey so I'll feel right at home if they are still flocked up. Last time I went later in the spring they had all bred out early and headed into the mountains. I'm starting to get that itch. Gotta be some turkey out there that needs some killin'.

I would wait if you can.  The snow is just starting to melt in town.  The big problem is if it does melt it will be a muddy mess and all you end up doing is rutting up roads and getting stuck.  But I get the fact its season and we all want to hunt that opening day.  From what I have seen lately they are still flocked up down low in everyone barn yard.
