Alaskan Brown Bear Hunt
« on: April 04, 2019, 03:57:53 PM »
Made the decision to do an Alaskan Brown Bear hunt so now the research begins.... Looking at a few years out if need be to go with a top outfitter, looking at the Alaska Peninsula. If anyone has any experience that they would like to share I would greatly appreciate it. I have contemplated this hunt for years and looked into it before, but decided to make it happen, so as soon as I have found outfit that is a fit, deposit going in.....  Pros and Cons of Spring or Fall??
Thanks,
BKMFR

Talk to Phil Shoemaker at Grizzly Skins. I've never heard a bad word about his operation.

How much are you willing to spend? A Kodiak bear hunt can be spendy and several years out. I know a great guide that does quite well. Not an easy hunt by any means but an awesome experience.

There are a couple brown bear hunts on the link I posted above.  I have Booked through Mark Young for an African trip.  I can vouch that he is a stand-up guy and sells quality hunts.

Figured it would be spring of 2020 for the peninsula, before being able to book with a top outfitter. I'm guessing 30-35,000 for just the hunt, plus tags, flights, taxidermy... thinking it's a $40,000.00+ hunt when all said and done...

Talked to a hunting guide on the rock when I lived there. Correct me if Im wrong but Ive heard the main benefit of the spring hunt is that the bears tend to be a bit more groggy and out of it. I would imagine they would be easier to find too due to all snow on Kodiak or the peninsula. Main drawback is that the hides can be lower quality because they have been rubbing them and lying on them all winter. Fall is more challenging, but the bears harvested in fall have much better hides.

BKMFR I think your price estimate is about right too. Thats the number I have heard from several people.

There are also some quality hunts in SE AK. Bruce Parker of Parker Guide Service (alaskaboathunts.com) has a good outfit and harvests some nice bears every year.

Never hunted the Peninsula but know many that have. Lance Kronberger of Freelance Outdoor Adventures  (https://freelanceoutdooradventures.com/) has a good outfit.

Spring hunts are fun and hides are great if you get them early, before they start rubbing. There is typically a much larger area to hunt and boars are easier to spot.

Fall hunts can be much more dramatic because you are relegated to hunting salmon streams with a higher concentration of bears. That can be good or bad...  A lot of bears, but more animals to navigate through n you are more likely to harvest a sow in the fall. Hides can be scragglier in the fall depending on the time.

Lots of options n $40k is probably about right to plan on.
