Where to get apples for trail cam?
« on: April 11, 2019, 09:07:36 AM »
I’m in Olympia. I want to buy lots of apples for bait for trail cams. That’s the only thing I know the deer like here. Where can I get cheap apples? And anything else people have found that west side deer like?

Most places in eastern WA will sell you cheap bulk apples, orchards, fruit stands, etc.

Or, you could drive around town when they start falling off trees and offer to pick them up for free.

Craigslist free section. Also, ask around at a local feedstore. Most folks with an abundance are more than happy to have their yard cleaned up. I use a snow shovel, 5 gallon bucket, and a large tub in the truck.

If you know of an apple packing warehouse you can inquire about bins of culls.  :twocents:

To the OP.  I don't know about South Sound, but here in Central Sound there are untold 100s of acres of feral apple trees on private property (used to be orchards, now just housing developments).  These apples rot on the tree, fall to the ground and make a mess.  I have no problems asking the homeowners to let me pick their apples.  Strangely, often they won't let me pick from the tree (not sure why), but don't mind if I pick from the ground.

It is an easy conversation when you are collecting apples for your chickens, just sayin'. ;)

Thanks for the ideas. Has anyone noticed that they prefer one kind over others?
