Dear Mr. President, Secretary Burnhardt, My elected members of Congress,

I'm writing to support the delisting of gray wolves from the endangered species list in the lower 48. As a resident of Washington, I'm watching as wolves, that know no fear of man, move closer and closer to our towns, ranches, other businesses, and homes. Our wild ungulate populations in the NE corner of our state have been severely diminished. Moose are disappearing from the landscape. The formerly endangered Selkirk woodland caribou herd is now considered extinct, the only caribou that were left in the lower 48. Elk populations in NE WA, ID, MT, and Yellowstone have plummeted by as much as 78%. Not only has the larger Canadian gray wolf reached recovery goals everywhere, but they're flourishing and their populations are increasing at an average rate of 30%+ per year. Immediate action is necessary to ensure the safety of our citizens, their property and assets, and the recovery and future health of depleted ungulate populations.

In addition, the gray wolf that was introduced, contrary to the testimony by the USFWS, are carriers of several diseases, including echinococcus granulosis, which were NOT eliminated prior to release into the Greater Yellowstone area as the USFWS has testified to Congress. This particular tapeworm parasite causes debilitating and often fatal hydatid cysts in the lungs and other organs of ungulates and is, in fact, a zoonosis - transferable and dangerous to humans. A study in 2014 in done by Idaho State University in conjunction with the Idaho Dept. of Fish & Game determined that as many as 65% of the gray wolves tested were carriers of this parasite. 65%.

Since 1900, conservationist hunters and outdoors men and women have backed and passed legislation to restore our beautiful wildlife from the brink of destruction to abundance across our nation. As a result, our wildlife management successes have been the envy of the entire world. If the rise of the wolf populations nationwide continues unfettered, we risk undoing the hard work of these conservationists for the last 120 years. It is absolutely incumbent upon you, our government, to take immediate steps to stop the further expansion of this huge predator's influence and territory. I implore you to take urgent action to delist these wolves in the lower 48.

Turning the power over to the states.  Is that a good thing to ask for in Washington?

Yes, it is. As long as the Canadian eaters are listed, this state will make no moves. Our wildlife managers have nowhere near the backbone and public support of ID or WY. Once they are delisted, at least they will have the opportunity to manage them. In other words, ESA delisting won't make it any worse and it could make it better.

This is starting to also get some traction with the cattleman’s association.
