Lost 5 sheep last night to a cougar
« on: September 10, 2019, 08:59:39 AM »
Had a cougar kill 5 sheep last night guess it needed to since we have no deer left. Just really frustrated with WDFW. When are they going to do something about our predator problem? I fear it will be too late. The gentleman in charge of predator kills said this is his seventh cougar call this week.

Clearly your sheep were sick / old / weak.  You should be thankful that we have an abundance of these beautiful, mysterious predators to keep our ecosystem balanced, and our deer and livestock healthier by culling the unfit.

Not yet they are on a wolf call right now. Supposed to be later if they don't handle it. I know tribal members that will.

Sorry about the sheep. I know that can be hard, sad, and frustrating. We had 5 sheep killed + a llama in one night to a cougar 2 summers ago. All I can say, is if you don't have one already, get a dog.

We had a dog for years and had more limited (every other year or so) cougar problems. Dog passed away, and cougars came left and right. Other than that, there's not much to do. You shoot this one, and another one will come in after. Just how they work.
Regardless, always can try and call the cat in and get him yourself. It is September you know

Raising sheep in Ferry County is the equivalent to raising chickens in a fox house at this point.  You guys are so overrun with cougar and bear.  I've never seen so many predators as when I hunted 121 the last few years.

I really hope WDFW is able to help you out somehow.  That being said... I'd definitely consider some calling setups.  See if you can take care of that pesky cat.

The response that we always get is ....
Better fences
Lock them in a barn at night
Get dogs
Talk to a biologist to learn how to live with them cause we chose to NOT live in the city
So my response is to kill it with any means needed then call them

The situation is handled can say I was absolutely astonished with WDFW both officer were very sincere and nice guys to boot the Stevens/Ferry county predator manager is an asset to that area. we loaded some of the dead sheep on top of a livestock protection dog, that was killed by a cougar the same night, so hard to say to get a dog, but i dont think that general area will have a problem with cougars for a while. :IBCOOL:

The state trees with dogs and kills a lot more cougars then people know. I don’t have the numbers but know of 4 around my place in the last year. But hey “cougars can’t get over populated”.

https://www.capitalpress.com/ag_sectors/livestock/wdfw-director-when-in-doubt-remove-the-cougar/article_d718cee0-57cd-11e9-9ff6-7b48a2be2ffe.html

I feel like if more people pressed the mountain lion thing with WDFW, we'd see more action from WDFW, especially under the new director.

There have been 15 domestic goats killed in Duvall in the last month or so by lions. Assumedly by the same female with twins. She's got a collar on. WDFW has been called, but at this point I'm assuming the people that owned the goats didn't push anything with WDFW so nothing got done. I also assume these are people from Seattle who moved to the country to become hobby farmers or something like that and aren't interested in killing anything. I had 2 WDFW game wardens in here yesterday getting their truck serviced and I asked them. They were assigned to Seattle and the marine detachment so they weren't entirely familiar with the policy on depredating mountain lions, but the one said she thought they were supposed to kill them. Even mentioned 2 different breeds of dogs that are used based on the situation(korelian bear dogs and hounds) and how they contract out the houndsman when needed.

Yeah, I never see them sitting on the picnic table at the State Park licking themselves, so they must be endangered, right?!?!

Sorry about the sheep. They seem to get it the worst. Pretty sure it's because the cat is in kill mode, and another runs by so it pounces, and another runs by so it pounces, and another.....
