Bad 209 primers
« on: September 11, 2019, 05:59:50 AM »
Anyone ever have any issues with these primers? I had a couple hang fire on me and about 4 or 5 not go off at all. My firing pin is Hitting it good and leaving a dimple so I’m not sure what’s going on. Went and bought new ones and seems to be fine so not really sure.

yep what powder, rifle and primers? A hang fire is normally not the primers fault but the powder or user loading it  :twocents:

Now if its blackhorn209, then yes, a primer can be an issue.

Yep, lots of 209 primers on the market.  I've shot many thousands, and I can count on one hand the number of bad primers that I've run into.  Here's a cheap one that has been 100% reliable:

I was shooting the blackhorn 209 powder and Winchester 777 caps. I did switch to pyrodex pellets hopefully that will be better. My gun is a CVA accura if that maters

LOL yep theres your problem buddy. 777 primers are not meant for bh209.

CCI 209M ( Magnum )
Federal 209A
Winchester W209 ( Blue Box )

Any of those primers will do the job fine for you

Probably, I have ignited pyro pellets with musket caps.
777 primers are designed to be "cooler" to help reduce the fouling known as the crud ring, common when shooting 777 with primer ignition.
Blackhorn manufacture says in the directions that you need a hot or magnum primer for Blackhorn 209.
I've had good ignition using standard Winchester 209 shotgun primers w Blackhorn.
Good luck.

I have had no misfire with the Federal 209A primers with the Blackhorn 209. I did pick up a box of the CCI209M this weekend because I want to see if they also work. My T/C has something like a 0.028” hole in the breech for the fire so I got myself some micro drill bits off Amazon for under $10.  They work great to keep the hole clear.
