Daypack that can hold a rifle/bow
« on: September 15, 2019, 04:56:45 PM »
I’m looking for a daypack that can carry a rifle OR bow, a bladder for hydration, and haul meet. Any recommendations? For reference, I was ready to buy this pack until I read it couldn’t carry a bow. https://www.mysteryranch.com/pop-up-28-pack

What’s your budget?

With enough straps, anything can carry anything.

I use a full curl system. One of the most bomb proof bags I've ever dealt with in its price point.
I've thought about upgrading to a higher end pack, but cant justify it as this does everything I want and more.

I've had a Tenzing  SP14 for a few years and have been happy with it.  Holds your rifle in a channel between the outer pockets and works well as a rest.  I don't know the exact volume but would classify it as a "big daypack".  Pretty reasonably priced too.

I like the Kuiu bow holder accessory. Nice quick release that I can release and grab the bow off my pack while hiking. I have their Ultra frame with 1800, 3000, and 6000 ci bags.  And use a Kifaru gun bearer to attach my rifle to the pack.  So can easily switch between weapons.

But you can attach a bow to most any pack with the right strapping.

Here’s what I know after a few years and a few packs.

I had an Eberlestock Just One. Great pack. Super functional. Until you put weight into it. Then it became super uncomfortable. Couldn’t get it off of my back fast enough. Never broke on me. Bulletproof. Heavy empty.

Tenzing 6000” was bad. I know this because Rainier10 bitched about it nonstop for several hours to the point I offered to trade packs with him on the side of the mountain.

KUIU was a legit upgrade but not as bombproof.  A lot more comfortable with weight in it than the Eberle. Was worried about the frame cracking because that’s what they were known for.

Several clunker packs along the way and I had a badlands 2200 and I hated it.

If I was buying now I’d look really hard at the KUIU Icon Pro frame with a 1850” or a 3000” bag on it.
If you had bottomless money I’d look at a Kifaru frame with a 3000” ish bag on it.

It seems like all the top tier packs compress down nicely into day pack mode.

Bummer.  I know they hunt archery season pretty heavily, so it may be back in stock before rifle season if that is what you want to use it for.  I would also guess that with the new frames out you could browse classifieds here and other forums and come up with a good deal on a used one.

I haven't used them all, but the Exo 2000 is pretty close to my ideal day pack with meat carrying capabilities.  I don't know where you are at, but if you are near Arlington and want to see one in person shoot me a pm and I would be glad to meet up.

I have a Mystery Ranch Selway.  It is very comfortable with 70 pounds in it and fairly light.  It is maybe a bit large for a day hunt (3,600 CCI or so), but you can tighten all the straps and take out the volume for day use.  I personally like having a pack with a bit more volume available in case I do a few nights out, or the weather is wet/cold so I can toss in a larger jacket, etc.  plus the weight difference between a 2000 and 3600 CCI bag is not very great, in my mind.  They also make the Pinter, which is smaller and uses the same frame.

It also seems like the Selways go on sale a lot at different places.  That spurred me to give it a try and I really could not be happier.

I run a kuiu icon pro suspension/frame with a kuiu ultra 5500 bag on it. It only weighs 4lbs (less with the smaller bags they have available) and compresses down to almost nothing for daypack use, and can expand out for multiple day backcountry trips. Comes with lots of extra straps to place where you want to strap a bow/rifle down. It’s been very comfortable with full loads of elk and bear meat with no pinch points. Very happy with it.

Kuiu has the icon pro suspension, 1850 bag, and 3200 bags on sale right now in thier outlet section.

Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately my fat a$$ needs the l/xl suspension so had to pay full price but just ordered the 3200, suspension, and frame plus a bunch of accessories (gun mount, glass pad, etc). Found out my neighbor runs that exact setup (but also has an 1850which he prefers to day hunt with), so I was able to demo his before ordering. I may add an 1850 down the road depending on what I think of the 3200 compressed down.
