Idaho & Wyoming bound: pics added 10.28
« on: October 11, 2019, 11:09:05 AM »
Kinda quiet around here so figured I’d start my own thread as I begin gearing up for the next two weeks - S. Idaho and Wyoming Elk!

I somehow managed to stay married after last years dream season wrapped up.  I only had WY planned this year until the Idaho elk opportunity fell on my lap last week.  Two dozen roses later, a couple “I promise 2020 will be different” little white lies, and I’m hitting the road.

I was able to post updates / success pics last year when I hunted Idaho at the same spot, I’ll try to do so again.  I’ll luckily be off the grid in Wyoming, starting Oct 19th.  Can’t hardly wait for a week of wall tent living in the high country, as long as the elk haven’t already hit the wintering grounds with all these crazy snow storms.

Best of luck, all!

Idaho hunt lasted all of 45 minutes.  Had my bull sound off the moment I closed the truck door.  Best part was my 10 yr old was by my side.  We called cow talked him in from 500+ yds, all the way to 30.  Wind was perfect and he was a screamer.  What a show!  Will get a pic posted up soon..

Either the truck is good luck or the kid?  Either or it worked out just fine.

Nice work dad.

Thanks.  Memory of a lifetime, for the both of us.  I now have a full-fledged elkacholic on my hands whom is dying to tag along to WY next week.  I clearly remember the days of wanting to do the same with my Dad and couldn’t stand being in School knowing he was chasing elk.

Couldn’t agree more, I thank my lucky stars everyday!  Last minute packing for Wyoming, hit the road tomorrow.  I’d  love to repeat the magic but the idea of wall tents, hunting elk off horseback, and a week in the high country of Wyoming already has the making of a successful hunt, regardless if a tag is punched.

Sorry about that.  Was hoping to put together a storyline as I find it fun to look back on prior posts / pictures etc. years down the road.  I'm playing some serious catch-up at both work and home so I'll get to the point and post a few pics....

Wyoming didn't disappoint.  It's been roughly 20 years since I last hunted this area and I've dreamt about my return ever since.  This area in particular gets hammered being that its an OTC tag for residents (non-res requires 1 point to draw) and virtually 100% public land.  Being a 3 week general season had us once again weighing the pros/cons of each week; eventually the 2nd week won out due to the first being a full moon which was essentially the only fact we had to go on early in the planning process.  As luck would have it, the decision to hunt the 2nd week of general was the right one.  The first week was unseasonably warm with highs in the upper 50's / low 60's, up until 3 days before our hunt when the cold front came in accompanied with moisture.....the perfect making for a dump of snow in the high country!  On paper this was turning out to be what we all dream of

As hoped, the snow not only made spotting elk much easier but also proved valuable as the elk were moving down out of the high country.  My bull, from what I gathered by many who know the country well, is virtually a unicorn for this heavily hunted unit.  I feel very, very fortunate as I was nothing more than in the right place at the right time.

So what are you buying your son to keep the peace?????

School sucks for the young hunters. :)

Sweet bull.
Love the mittens and fire on the ridge top pic.
Been there in that moment many times and the fire feels damn good.

Nice work! You're being very humble here. Hunters that apply themselves have a sense for how to be in the right place at the right time
