Wind indicator in front of camera?
« on: January 13, 2021, 09:09:31 PM »
Anyone ever tried hanging a piece of flagging tape out in front of their camera to check wind direction when pics are taken? I’ve been tossing around the idea of doing some testing around my place to see if they’ll trigger my camera from the movement and at what distances (not sure if my cameras are infared activated or motion activated but they’re all stealth cam’s). I’m thinking that it could be handy to know because as anyone who hunts in the mountains knows, just because the wind is steady out of the north in the valley, every knoll, ridge and draw alters the wind direction. The only downside I can see, besides accidentally getting 10,000 pics of a piece of flagging tape, is that a random piece of tape in the middle of the woods is gonna make a passerby start looking around. And we all know there’s a lot of scum bags out there.

Cool idea, just go with something much smaller like thread.  I think it will be pretty hard to judge direction when you only have a 2 D photo, but you might be able to get a decent idea.

That’s a good idea. Just has to be something visible in a cam pic

I was kinda thinking that might happen. That’s why I was gonna do some testing around my house first. See what distance i would have to put it away from the camera to where it wouldn’t set the camera off but you could still see it

My stealth cams aren't super sensitive past 30-40'.

I would start at 50' and go from there. Line of site is going to be the toughest part to achieve. Getting both the triggering animal and wind indicator in the same pic.

I like the idea but I'd have to agree that figuring out the exact angle would be a little tough. Having it higher or lower in the frame might help you determine the angle since it would be like looking up/down at it.

Been doing it for years . Never had a issue with cams taking pics. Hang it out far enough where it doesn’t trigger. Used thread on a light white feather too

Will probably trigger your cam. If shadows, squirrels, wind blowing grass trigger it ribbon surely will unless it is placed way in the background so you can zoom in on it when looking at your deer pictures.

Seems like a feasible upgrade, little weather station as part of the camera, direction, temp and wind speed
