attempted theft question
« on: October 27, 2019, 06:58:47 PM »
So I always put a camera or 2 pointed at my truck to get video of thieves breaking into it.My partner had it happen once before.
Yesterday had a old guy drive by and see my camera even though it was camo'd with moss and such. He backs up and proceeds to walk up to it and works on it for over a minute trying to get the python lock undone. He didn't realize it has video and audio so i can hear part of what he's saying to himself.Without question he was trying to steal it.
Do you think anything can be done to the guy for just attempting to steal it, since i have video of it?
I found out who he is, the bummer is i'm always looking out for the druggies and this guy is a halfway normal looking 67ish year old guy.I'm going to have to figure something else out now since he knows i have cameras pointed at my truck.
What do you guys do to identify thieves?
Or do you just buy a beater only for parking out there.

I don't think he could be prosecuted for attempting to steal the camera but post the video and at least you might shame him into thinking twice the next time he wants to steal something

If you found out who he is let him know you have pics/vids of him and know what he was trying to do. Let him know not to try it again and keep your cams up for the druggies. Maybe get a bear box too?

Report it.. most likely wasn't his first attempt at theft. Even though he's older maybe he's on the local leo radar for other crimes. .

I'm working on reporting it.
If nothing can be done, i will pay him a visit and let him know i have 2-1/2 minutes of him trying to steal my camera.
Public shaming in a small town could be good or bad since they have clan living there.
I have some other ideas if its seems like it will continue to be a problem.

I’d post his butt all over social media!!!!  And, I’d pay him a visit, let him know you know who he is, and yes, I’d show the police the video!!!

I'd definitely pay him a visit... and show him the video.
Some dirt bags do have an actual conscience when confronted.

I'm no lawyer, but why can't he be prosecuted for trespassing, since he was obviously trying to steal your property.

Doesn’t seem like he would last long being a thief in that neck of the woods.

A 67ish looking guy trying to steal a camera isnt normal no matter how nice he might look. I would post his pick on some social media sites and hope it got back to him.

I wouldn't pay him a visit unless you want to open yourself up to criminal accusations...

It's attempted theft. Report it and let leo contact him...you pay him a visit and who knows what could happen, or what he would accuse you of doing to take the heat off himself...

I wouldn't confront him at his house.  I would however report him to the leon and post it on all social media.

That's the route i'm going is reporting it. Then if i can get the sheriff to tell him that i have a full video of him doing it hopefully that might wake him up. If not it will be on  here if i can figure out how to post the video.

Report it. Don't confront him, let the law do it. Give them the video. Only post it if they do nothing about the crime.

Report it and hand LE the video. If he is a repeat thief, this gives them the ammo they need.
