Keep the character or Get them fixed????
« on: November 08, 2019, 03:42:52 PM »
I was talking with a buddy and showing him this years moose and a friendly debate arose.......have the taxidermist fix the broken tines or leave the character??

I am of the thought that you leave the character.  Shorter tine length due to breakage only adds to the story.  My moose had to be the big man on the hill and he had to be right handed.   He has multiple broken off points on his right side....a couple of which are obviously 2-4 inches shorter.  The largest break has a fracture with the other moose's hair stuck in it.  When skinning him, we found a piece of antler from another bull stuck under his hide.....This dude was a scrapper!!!!

My buddy ask if I was going to get the breaks fixed??  I had never even considered it up to this point.....but the answer was no!!  I personally like the character.  It was a very interesting debate as he was 100% "YES" get the fixed.

Where do you all stand on this topic??  I can add pics tomorrow to show some of the breaks in detail.....other pics from members who respond will only make this topic that much more interesting, so post away.

I think you know where I stand. I would leave it as is. You have seen my mounts, busted, bent, etc. I like the natural as they were look. Also left untouched for scoring in the future.

I agree leave him how you found him.  Only exception for me might be if he broke something in a fall when you shot him.  Depending on how you have him mounted, it might have also been unique to figure out a way to incorporate that tine you found from the other bull, it could definitely add to the mystic and story of your bull.

Leave it the way you found him.

I'm normally a leave em like you killed him guy but if you know EXACTLY what he had, ie history with the deer, or he broke it on a fall I say fix it if you want. I'll be fixing the big kicker on my CO buck this year but we know exactly what it was because I have 15 min of video of him from before I killed him. :twocents:

These were sheds I mounted on a replica skull. There was some rodent damage I repaired but I chose to leave the broken tines the way there were. It adds to his character. Even with the broken tines he measures 45” wide.

This what I thought most would say.....I live the character and it defines my bull, he was a battler.  In my mind...he was king of the mountain.  I even found a piece of another bulls antler stuck in his head.  Here are a few pics of his breaks.
