« on: November 11, 2019, 05:18:04 PM »
I was looking at Winchester xr in size 6 shot and federal 3rd degree to try and pattern out of benelli nova 20 gauge I got. Long way off from next spring but need something to keep me occupied until then. Thanks! A lot of good info on here reading and absorbing what I can.

XR is good. I switched to TSS because of penetration issues. Ie BBs resting on the spine in the neck. That was a 22 yard shot.  This year clean pass through on all but 1 BB. That one was under the skin after it went through both wing joints @ 51 yards. It costs more if you want to go that route, but XR puts them down. What choke are you looking at. The Carlson XR choke shot well in my Beretta with Mobil choke thread pattern, same as your Benelli.

I have shot 5 turkeys over the years. All with Federal Premium 20 gauge 2-3/4" 1-1/8 Copper buffered 6's. Shooting a Browning Lighting 26 " barrels improved cylinder.
Never had to follow up with 2nd shot which would of been modified.

Rem Nitro Turkey and Winchester Longbeard XR? are my two go to shells. I haven't tried TSS yet but I may some day. Use whatever shell patterns best in your gun. Turkeys are relatively easy to kill but can be hard to find (sometimes). Best, 253shotgunner

I've shot all my birds with Hevi shot but mostly because I bought a box to see what the hype was about and haven't missed with it yet. Honestly at 20 yards and in the affordable stuff does just as well was the expensive stuff(dead is dead). Start with the affordable stuff and see how it groups and if you're happy stick with it. A good choke also can do wonders with more affordable ammo.

don't see the reasoning of cheaper vs expensive ammo for turkeys. the amount of rounds fired is small and the gains in the modern TSS are big.

Exactly.   Spend $300 on gas, save how much per shot?

7/9 TTS is like 5x the amount of shot with same impact energy as copper 4's over 40yds... cant see a down side!

Die hard Levi shot magnum blend guy. Stuff is unbelievable in my youth model rem 870 with hevi shot choke tube. I carry it over my 12 now.

yea i think hevi is 15g and TSS is 18g so quite close.. down range penetration sides on the TSS but way downrange.. for waterfowl (burning up ammo) i would go hevi but for turkey i would go TSS

Hevi shot has a TSS load out that is actually less than the magnum blend that I normally shoot.

 hevi shot is not pure TSS they have a hevi-13 blend or the strut-X blend? is that what you are referencing? Strut X blend performs closer to full TSS and "the sell" is half the price of full TSS (still comparing to the high end stuff).  original argument is price for a turkey load is small potatoes with rounds fired annually....

again, just a discussion here, OP was using a 20GA and i would run TSS for the small difference in cost period.

I may try TSS load just because I'm interested but that being said I do see why people don't buy it. My turkeys were shot with Winchesters that I bought almost 15 years ago. You get your turkeys within 30 yards and it really doesn't matter what you fling at them. You could then use the extra 40 bucks for a tank of gas.
