Rust......I'm an idiot
« on: November 27, 2019, 08:34:14 PM »
Hunted muzzy elk and got poured on all day. Got home exhausted and didn't take out my breach plug and kinda forgot about it.

Took an act of superhuman strength to get it out , and naturally the threads have rusted a bit. I did my best to clean the threads inside the barrel but I'm worried I screwed this gun up.

It's a knight ultra lite....

Any tips on how to save this gun so I don't have to leave the plug in for life? Worried I won't be so lucky to get it out next time.

Cheers and happy Thanksgiving all

Clean clean and more clean to get as much surface rust as possible.  Put the plug bag in with a very liberal dose of anti seize on the threads.  I use loctite anti seize and love it.  It comes like a glue stick so it is easy to keep in your muzzy kit.

We use the white Teflon tape that you use for plumbing works great and doesn't make a mess

Always put anti seize on breech plug and nipple threads and I just barely snug them up when assembling. Use bore butter in the barrel when the steel is hot, I think it seasons and protects the steel. Your gun will be fine.

I forgot to mention my breech plug had been Teflon taped, still rusted up.

Thanks all

Teflon will not protect your threads......you must use a liberal amount of anti-seize to protect your threads.  You will never have a problem getting your breach plug out again.   Like said above....also use it on your nipple threads.

Teflon tape does protect the threads from sticking.
I had the same thing as the OP mentioned I forgot to take the charge out of my daughters knight muzzy put the wrench on it easy peasy unscrewed it like it had just been put in but had it get stuck using the grease before I learned about the tape

Yes it helps with it not seizing up...but it does not have protective properties against rust and corrosion.

I put Nikal Anti seize on the threads.  Works good.

If you are really worried take the plug to lowes or the like and determine the thread and pitch.  Buy the appropriate tap and die and clean up all the treads.  Only use anti seize from now on.
