Machias's 2019/2020 Season
« on: November 25, 2019, 08:56:31 AM »
So I've had 10 sets out for the past 10 days, 6 coyote sets and 4 coon sets.  In the past 10 days I have had one snapped trap from a deer, one snapped trap from a person standing on it, one stolen coon trap and one bait stealer who dug out the side of my dirthole set, because I did not use adequate backing.  Three coyote sets totally frozen in because I did not initially use waxed dirt.  I could actually stand on them.  Oops!  :)  So I set a second trap, in waxed dirt at the spot where the yote dug out the dirthole and connected this morning with a nicely furred female.  Not very big, but on the board.  I also got lucky and have been given permission to trap a little over 1000 acres, so as soon as deer season is done, I'll be getting busy laying some steel and setting some snares!  I hope everyone has a fun, great and safe season!

Another dog this morning.  This set was put in 26 days ago.  Nice male.  Thought I'd add a before and after photo.  :)

Lots of help over there for the wolves, check with F4WM, bunch of their cooperators have it figured out.

Yep, I've been a member for a couple of years and have had the privilege of chatting with several accomplished wolf trappers, really looking forward to being able to go after the Ultimate Predator!

Takes me back to my first fox, chain rattling in the dark.  This would be another level up.  This would be similar to walking up to my first bear.  Nothing like walking up to a deer.  :)  I have a friend who described walking up and finding his trap missing, lots of wolf tracks in the snow, then the sound of chain rattling in the pitch black and then the unmistakable woof/howl of a big wolf.  Scans with his headlamp and sees those eyes staring back and the breath in the cold morning.  THAT, I cannot wait for!!  :)
