Russ, I had a flock walk right up to me, 15 yards, while I was deer hunting in blaze orange.

Useful but not necessary.  I've killed more without than with, but I've killed at least one that had me pinned (ran in and stopped about 8', was staring at me until he saw the hen decoy and went into a strut). 
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.
