Operation Bobcat
« on: December 05, 2019, 05:19:42 PM »
Has anybody here had repeated success specifically targeting bobcat via calling?  Whats your m.o?  How long on average til you get a response?  .22wmr should be adequate id think, yeah? As far as i know ive only called in one, and it busted me.  But ive never actually tried to target them.  Im about to go for it.  Words of wisdom would be much appreciated.

Cool thing is you can hunt them any time of the day.

A couple of years back I had a Master Hunter cow tag. It was January, warm about 60 out. I usually take a noon siesta (naps are for old people) I decided to lay down in a ditch at a forked logging road intersection. This was about one PM. I was about 20 minutes into my siesta and moved around a little and zipped up my jacket. I heard a strange growl behind me. I grabbed my .300 jumped up an turned around. I was thinking cougar and looking for a cougar. What I saw was a bobcat about 12 feet from me. Well, it took off not running and bounding, but walking really fast. I lipped squeaked and barely got a reaction. I must have been 20-25 feet from me when I shot it. Yep, a 22 mag would have been a lot better choice. I still skinned it out and had it tanned makes a super nice wall hanging.
There are only so many sunrises left.

Thats kind of the impression i was under.  I have this little squeaker from bearmanric that i think im going to use.  I bought it a while back thinking it would be good for bobcat, but ive never gone out actually targeting bobcat before, so ive never used this call yet.

Every one I have called in has been with a fawn in distress. Slow and raspy. Just my experience.

Called one in last year coyote hunting, end of my set hit pup in distress. Came in on a good trot for 200 yards straight down a road, popped him at 100. This year during muzzle, noticed one watching me from a boulder in some steep timber, brisket shot at 80 yards....50 cal is not the best for bobcat...go figure.

I like to hang my call in a tree and stab my decoy in above it and play bird sounds

I called this one in for one of my hunters a few years back. Snowshoe rabbit in distress on a primos electronic call. Called for about five minutes and stopped for a minute. As soon as I started calling a again it jumped out of the underbrush and presented a quick shot with a 12 ga. and Hevi-shot Dead Coyote loads. Nice cat for Mike!!
