Bass Fishing lures
« on: December 06, 2019, 09:05:50 AM »
I got some great ideas on a previous thread about trout fishing in western washington. I have a son living near Dallas Texas and i figure he'd be bass fishing down there. When i was a kid we used toads, caterpillars, etc. Whatever crawled and the bass would hit it. Any lure suggestions? There used to be a black and yellow one in my fathers tackle box he said was his favorite artificial lure...

The Chatter Bait has been fishing very well for me and my friends...I just started tossing one around last spring. I have friends in Pennsylvania that have had great success tossing chatter baits as well...Thats the latest greatest for me anyhow...

Imo.....two must use lures for bass.

White spinnerbaits and good old texas rigged plastic worm. I prefer Berkley products in plastics. Add a top water when conditions are good and that's my top three

I've had more success with spinnerbaits than chatterbaits.  I know both can be effective though.

Other favorites of mine:

KVD crankbaits. Size 1.0 and 1.5.

Senko style stick baits. Texas rigged or Wacky rigged. These are hands down the most successful baits for me when fish are being picky.

Topwater Frog lures.  I buy cheap ones off ebay for about $1.25 each.  Name brand ones are up to $15 each.  Definitely worth having at least a couple of these in your tackle box.

Curly tail jigs are also great bass lures.

I've had some success with roostertail spinners and kastmaster spoons.  But the other lures listed above are what i use when targetting bass.

The link above is for the top selling baits. Like h20 said, spinnerbaits and plastic worms are great choices.  Buzzbaits are really fun as well.

Rat-L traps and square bill crankbaits are must haves too.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Senko plastics worms wacky rigged and crank baits.  Perch colored FatRap.  Mainly the Senko worms though.

Bass fishing is so much more varied than trout, at least for me.   Deep, spawn, lily pads, structure . . . .   But you hit on some good go tos.  Motor oil color for soft plastic worms and lizards was always trusty.  White spinner bait is good for covering water and near structure.  Maybe a yellow one, too.

Zara spooks and jerk baits for early morning top water is always a blast.

Jerkbaits like Sluggos (pink), if they still make them, were always fun in the lily pads.

And of course a few Rapalas in silver and gold should be in everyone's tackle box.

One of my favorites was a carolina-rigged lizard in deep water.

Since your request is specifically for someone bass fishing in Texas,  the lure selection for me would be:

Strike King 10XD's for deep cranking
Large lizard style plastics for Carolina Rigging
Large jigs for ledge fishing
6 inch or bigger soft swimbaits for fishing flooded cover

Of course topwaters like Whopper Ploppers, buzz baits, frogs etc.

IF the person is REALLY into bass fishing down there, then your absolute best bet is a Tackle Warehouse gift card. You just wouldn't get it right unless the angler sent you a list! Trust me, I had to train everyone to not even try, cause they would 100% of the time waste their money due to my bass tackle tastes being far too specific. The thought is nice but....

Good luck and let me know if he ever needs a co-angler down there??  :chuckle:

Thanks for the advice. He's got a kayak he bought recently, but with a new house, working full time, and school full time, he needs some way to relax. He used to really like fishing up here, so i figured bass fishing down there would be something hed get into.

Gotcha

If he's primarily kayak fishing, then I would stick to reaction style baits that others have mentioned (hard to deep crank from a yak)

Jackhammer bladed jigs are hot products right now. Expensive, so a good 'gift' opportunity! (Chartreuse and white is pretty standard issue) or anything 'bluegill' patterned.
Zoom and Berkeley Power Worm soft plastics like worms and lizards (6-7 inch range), watermelon and green pumpkin are 'work anywhere' colors.
Booyah makes decent frogs and spinnerbaits.

I am a massive fan of Strike King products! Good value and lots of options! Tell him we want PHOTOS!!  :chuckle:

This, these baits are tried and true winners. For worms, black or motor oil color have always been best for me. I will also go up to a 10" size, especially for largemouth. For topwaters, the Zara Spook is my go to.
Fish hard, hunt harder!
