New to the state, looking for advice
« on: December 08, 2019, 09:41:27 PM »
Hey all,

I recently moved to Colfax, and I want to get into Coyote hunting but am looking for guidance on a few things.

The first thing I am wondering is would it be weird to knock on some farmer's doors and ask if I could hunt on their land? Won't I seem like a weirdo/intruder if I just drive on someone's land and knock on their front door?
Also, I know I can hunt on BLM land near me however the map I am looking at doesn't seem to show a whole lot of local BLM land.

Finally, I am planning on hunting Coyote with my AR15. I looked online but couldn't find any info so I will ask here. Are there magazine limits when hunting with an AR15? I'm not asking if its legal to dump a whole 30 round mag into a Coyote, I'm mainly wondering if I need to go out and buy some 5 or 10 round pinned mags? Can I load 5 rounds into a 30 round magazine and be good to go legally speaking?

Thanks everyone! Any pointers or advice you guys have for a newbie is greatly appreciated!

I have had good luck approaching farmers who are out and about...feeding cattle, or what have you, as opposed to knocking on their door.  Just try not to  interrupt them if they are totally engrossed in the task at hand, and wait for them to step back from whatever they are doing.

For instance: I saw a farmer loading hay onto a truck using a forklift.  I pulled over, and waited until he finished loading, then approached him.  He gave me permission, and I took coyotes from his property regularly.

Knocking on doors can work, though.  You never know without asking.  Once you get permission on a farm, ask neighboring farmers by mentioning that their neighbor gave you permission.

By the way..their are some great coyotes in that area, but also wolves.

NO limit on magazine size.  So yes, 30 rounder would be fine.

Small bit of advice, dress somewhat nice when you go ask for permission, not suit and tie, but nice jeans and a decent shirt.  Goes a long ways if you dress neat and are well groomed.  Also if you have a kid, take them along, always helpful.  Good luck!

Also, remember that coyotes around your area weigh about 120-175 lbs each.  8) Alright, maybe a little less than that. Happy hunting!

In my vast experience in that area, wheat farmers are a lot less receptive to allow coyote hunting. Focus on the cattle guys. Head south towards the snake where there is more range land and less wheat :twocents:

As for the gun, 30rnd mag is just fine but you'll enjoy a 10 round mag a lot better.  30rnd sticks out pretty dang far so they can dig into your back when slung across your chest and if you have to get prone they can really mess a guy up.

IMO wheat farmers and cattle ranchers are pretty receptive to coyote hunters, it’s the alfalfa farmers that through s*** fits over coyote hunting.

I was hiding behind tires last year and shot a deer when the farmer walked up.  I was worried he would be pissed but he said it's no big deal, it almost guaranteed I wasn't going to shoot the irrigation since it was directly above me.
