turkey chokes and guns
« on: February 11, 2020, 02:30:05 PM »
so i am finding that each gun really has its own personality toward 40 yard shot pattern. i am interested in creating sort of a starting point here for reference, providing your gun model and choke tube constriction you are using with a rough 40 yard pattern performance and ammo. The rule i am working to is at 40 yards you should have 90% of your shot still inside an 18" circle (as told to me by the "experts), if you are not there, you have room to improve for sure as well!

I'm running a SBE2 12 GA with a TSS Carlson turkey choke tube (.650) and 2 1/4oz blend of  TSS 7/9 and get over 50% pellet count inside 10" ring.

Looking for specific data related to Mossberg 835 12 GA (friends), his gun is throwing shot all over and i want a starting point for this weekend, he will be using the heavy blend 5/6/7's ...

Every gun shoots different.  As an example I own 4 BT99's each one completely different in pattern and POI.  Same gun different results, I know they are not a turkey gun but a shotgun is a shotgun.  The only way to do it is a lot of time at the patterning board (grease boards are the best imo) and fine out what your gun likes load and choke.

I load about 10k shells a year and used to play with some pet loads.  I can say that the faster the shot the more deformed the pattern would be.  I can not speak to the factory shells but the time difference is a 1200fps shell vs 1500 in next to nothing at 40 yards.

Oh...I got to say Chokes lie.  I personally own a IM that shoots much tighter than the same brand full.  So that might be something to think of.  Browning Chokes are the worst for that.  I know you stated the you are shooting a Benelli, but you might want to try another brand of choke.  I honestly have had good luck with cheap Carlson's.

I have a Winchester SXP running a heavy shot turkey choke.  I always say that 2 identical shotgun will shoot different patterns sometimesnwith the same exact chokes and loads.  That pattern hrease board would work great with lead loads but the tungsten will probably put some mast dents in it.  Shooting last year at one.of my seminars using Heavy-Shot Magnum Enviro Blend I put some dents in the board at 30 yards.

:yeah:
I aggrege with Henrydog on both of his posts. Benelli/Beretta are about the same factory very a lot, Carlson's are good I run one on my turkey gun a 391 Beretta. George Trulock (Choke Maker) told me that all chokes are good, just need to pattern them to see what works best with your gun. And he noted all the fancy Turkey Chokes were just gimmicks to get you to buy them.   :twocents:

.410 CZ Drake over under with improved cylinder and modified chokes. #9 TSS loads. Good out to 25 to 30 yards.
Maturity is when you have the power to destroy someone who did you wrong but instead you breathe, walk away, and let life take care of them.

Get the barrel threaded and a choke tube go to 9.5 shot and turn it into a 40+yard gun.

He should have no problem getting that 835 to 50 yards.

I can hit 55 yards all day with a $20 tight wad and cheap ammo. But I normally use a Carlson's turkey choke with 3.5 long beard.
