I’m all in with 13 deer points I’m getting close to getting what I would think is a halfway decent tag.

That is a rarity. Would be nice to draw the Henry's but don't hold your breath.

I'm in for muzzy elk, way better odds than Washington, even with one NR tag.  Whoever draws should have epic antler growth, most of Utah is above 100% for snow pack!

Im also in for muzzy with 1 tag. Far better odds than most tags I apply for only 5 people last year had more points than me in specific unit

I'm at 21 points for deer and bison and 11 for everything else. I think that surge of people currently at 11 will remain for a lot more years. I don't have a lot of hope for those points.

My big problem with point creep is that while I know its costing me more, I think I'd rather pay more to make a DIY hunt on public land than the same amount of money for a guided hunt on private.

Its not about the animal, its about the experience and being able to say you figured it out and won.  I think a rational person just says... save your money and buy yourself a guided hunt every 5 years or something, but I don't want that experience!

I wish they'd just sell some OTC hunts for the same price as a guided for those who are too impatient to wait.  At least you could make your own plan on how to save up and when to do it, instead of getting surprised and having a few months to figure it out.

I dont know, watching the creep is dang frustrating.

I think going on a guided hunt would be a blast....its a different experience but that doesn't necessarily make it a bad one...I think guides are a hugely overlooked resource regardless of your experience level

if we only go for  "Everest" level of experience and look down at everything else we will be missing out on a lot of awesome opportunities

Food for thought

Yeah, I guess my point is that I'd rather harvest a non trophy animal in a trophy area than harvest a trophy animal with a guide, at least so far in life.  Limited things I've done with guides so far have left me feeling a little empty.  The fun is in learning the area, learning habits, getting better and working up to whatever goals you've set for yourself.

I wouldn't feel at all bad about drawing a great unit, having a great experience and shooting a very average or even below average bull.  Some of it is just having a hunk of nature to yourself I suppose.  Maybe paying for private land access and no guide would be a good balance in my future.

Even if you think about something like an OTC idaho tag.  a $600 tag for a 10% chance is really the same as a $6000 hunt with a near guarantee.
