Well hopefully others had more luck today than me. Didn’t see anything but some deer.

Got my first bear today, 154 yards with .270wsm.  Hunted this wilderness area quite a few times and finally connected.  He went about 50 yards and that was it.   Happy to start off the year on a good note.

Little Pathfinder with his first bear.  Opening day 2020.

I got this guy last tuesday. Not a big one but it's my first one. Last year was my first year bear hunting because I saw a monster bear cross the road twice in the same spot. So I posted up every day after work and some weekends and I would watch that stretch of road waiting for him to cross. I caught him one more time but couldn't get a clear shot. Although I did have a real small bear come within 10 feet of me twice that was way too small to shoot. So this year I posted up from sunrise to dark saturday. I tried calling mid day but only had a coyote come in. Sunday I hunted elsewhere. Monday after work I went back and watched until dark and nothing showed up. Tuesday, I posted up and at about 7:30 PM this guy came wandering up the road and I got to watch it for a good 2 minutes before shooting. I'm pretty certain it's the same small one from last year, just grew up a little. So I bought my second tag and I've been out almost every night still waiting for the big guy to show up. If you want to practice your patience, this is the way to do it.

BTW the pic is an optical illusion. It only weighed 150lbs

Got my first bear.  I thought it was bigger, but I was by myself and It gave me the shot that I told myself to wait for, so I'm happy with it.

It came out of a wooded draw at about 300 yds at 8pm friday evening.  I didn't want to take a shot that far and so close to thick timber late in the evening.  So I watched and waited as it worked it's way further into the clear cut.  When it was about 250 yds away I took the shot and it took off for the cover of timber.  I took a 2nd shot on the run and must of hit in front of it, because it turned 180 degrees and back towards where it was on the first shot.  It didn't make it too far before it expired.  1st shot took out it's heart and 2nd shot was a clean miss.  2 pack trips later and I was back in camp and in bed by midnight.  I definitely need to get better at skinning.  After several mistakes in the dark I finally gave up and just concentrated on getting the meat out.  We put one of the sirloins on the traeger yesterday and it tasted great.
